Looking Back

Posted , 8 users are following.

feeling a bit frustrated because of apparent lack of progress re leaving the penguin waddle behind I have been comparing the first weeks out of hospital to now, 15 weeks post op.

at 8 days I went to a concert. I sing with a choir but had to miss it this year so went to hear it instead. I needed  2 people to escort me, daughter and boyfriend. Booked seat with arms. I could drive myself there now.

at 12 days I went out for a choir meal. Needed husband to drive, could walk there now.

i was taken everywhere by family and friends unless I was able to walk and even then sometimes someone walked with me.

i could only do half mt tai chi class, and some of it sitting.

So I have got most of my life back,no longer in pain, but need to concentrate re the physio and exercises.

    Morning Maggie

you are really doing well and it great to hear of the progress. I was fortunate enough to spend time with my favourite physio therapist on Monday and she confirmed that while it is great to go without a stick when feeling strong and walking without the waddle, as soon as I feel tired or slip into waddle I should reach for the stick. I should aim to walk waddle-less as often as possible to avoid it becoming a habit.

Others on here have talked about carrying a foldable stick for those times.  I took one out for dinner with me the other night and used it on way back to car.  I hadn't needed one all day but by end of day it just kept me upright.

Yes I have a folding stuck in my handbag. Use it less than previously, but sometimes late evening it is a welcome friend

Oh how I feel frustration too.....with a capital F! The physio and exercises are a bit of a bind I find but essential....

Glad you are getting back to normal life.

I got rid of my limp , was doing lovely walks but then in an overenthuiastic effort to walk as tall as possible trying to see just how different my leg length was I strained the groin on my old operated leg  done 15 years ago and now that feels uncomfortable all the time. The new one at 12 weeks is great.

I'm so cross with myself as I was doing great before with no problems or limp and now I can't walk as far.

Me too - the perils of overdoing it strike too easily - must learn to be more circumspect - and be glad of any improvement

I am almost five weeks out from surgery and am quite discouraged. I still use my walker for distance and the knee on the surgery side hurts when I do a half mile walk, back hurts, sorry to complain. I am beginning to wonder if I will ever walk normally or without walker. Now I have to note here that before surgery I was in horrid shape, many days had to be house bound and flat on my back. All of you on this forum have been so helpful and I do hate to complain.

Don't you worry about complaining on this forum. It's better than complaining to family and friends . No matter how much they care for you they cannot know how you feel but people on here do. My progress is slow too and I'm on here at 5 am because I overdid the walking yesterday on one crutch and have taken paracetamol about half hour ago.

Well said attractac.  My girlfriend and all friends have been amazing but I learned early to keep negatives to myself as no one outside of this mob understands.I finally got back to my place after staying with others (and hospital) for a month. I over did it and suffered last night. Went shopping today and yes am lying down now. For others outside the hippies it would sound like whinging but we all know this stuff all too well.
