Mucosal layer coming out?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I THINK I have the rectal mucosal layer on it's way out.  My husband said it looks like piles but it's very soft and one side and underneath.  I have bowel and bladder and vaginal vault prolapses so wonder if this sounds as though there is the beginning of a rectal prolapse as well?  I have Ehlers Danlos (connective tissue disease).  I'm 65 and have frightened the life out of myself by seeing pictures of really bad rectal prolapses on line.  I never get constipated now (take macrogol and fibregel every day because I had a lifetime history of constipation) but is there anything else I can do to prevent this getting worse?  I did try wet toilet paper but found it stung, so went back to the softest dry paper I could find.  I've read online that they can do the same thing for mucosal prolapse as the treatment for piles but if you're managing OK with it as it is, is there any point in having that done - will it prevent it getting worse?  The only advice I've had is to make sure I don't get constipated, which I don't.

    Chris,

When I was in my forties I lived in Australia, and had several prolapses. Rectocele cystocele, enterocele, and urethracele, all of which were corrected with surgery and have served me well for 25 yrs. Four years ago I could feel pressure in my anus which felt like a prolapse. During investigation it was found that I also had another rectocele, and a vaginal vault prolapse, as well as the rectal prolapse. I have had surgery for the rectocele, and the vaginal vault prolapse, but the doctors do not want to do the rectal prolapse because it may prove difficult in view of previous operations. I am not accepting this, and am pushing for surgery to correct it.

None of these issues get better without surgery, especially as you get older and things are gravitating downwards. ( I am 71) If I had still been living in Australia, they would have fixed it and I would be back to my old self. In the UK you have to fight for everything, and that is what I would advise you and anyone else to do. You dont have to put up with poor quality of life if something can be done about it. Don't let anyone fob you off. Get it repaired and you wont look back.

Thanks Gillian - that's really helpful.  It's not at the stage of needing anything done yet, but I certainly will push for it to be sorted when it gets to that point then.  It's not causing me discomfort at the moment, but it's just that I've noticed it happening.  I have got a prolapse pessary that's supporting the vaginal prolapses (my anterior repair failed within a year) and that's working brilliantly.  I had one for years before the repair, so was happy to go back to that, and I'm hoping that will prevent those prolapses getting worse, but it's just the possible beginnings of the rectal one that got me worried.

My GI doctor told me to clean my hands and put some petrolium jelly on my small finger. Then insert it into the anus after each bowl movement. To enhance the effect, I am sure to clean the area with a water spray directly after the bowl movement. (usually I just jump in the shower for a quick spray. When my hemmroids get bad I sometimes use a prescription supossitory to shrink them. You sould like you have a more complicated connective disease disorder so I would check with a specialist for hemmroids. Try a second opinion. Oh, and stay away from anything spicy or high PH foods like orange juice or tomatoe juice to reduce the burning. No nuts either. My Mom used to sit in hot water and it helped her.

Ah thanks James.  I eat nuts every day, so will swap those for something else!
