Need help understanding my hands!

Posted , 3 users are following.

My right hand is unable to make the ASL sign for "3", otherwise identified as the girl scouts/boy scouts sign. My ring finger and index finger won't straighten out unless I press down on my thumb and pinkie with my left hand. But once I let go, they immediately bend back and sometimes lock up. My hands and fingers have hypermobility, in fact my right pink often never bends at the second phalange but rather the first, and will lock up doing so. Is there any reason imy fingers do this?

    Hello Strangytie,

As you say you have hyper-mobility, as do my children, and one had tight tendons in the fingers making Sign Language a bit tricky. We were seen by a specialist years ago who reccommended massaging the tendons daily ( a hand cream makes this easier). Over time the tight tendons stretched slightly and the fingers straightened except one which was straightened by surgery.

If you are concerned about your hand / fingers I reccommend you seek advice from a medical professional (GP) who may refer you to a specialist.

    Best wishes, Joanne

Please look into Dupuytrens disease. My fingers were very similar to what you describe. See the health patient on description of DD.
