Hi All.  After 2 years of rightsided pain around rib area, and regularly feeling sick and vomiting, I've had an endoscopy this week and been diagnosed with a 'small' hiatus hernia. I was told this by a nurse at the hospital on discharge from my endoscopy.  I've got an appointment in a couple of weeks to chat with my GP about the results and discuss diet and meds as this wasn't even mentioned at hospital!

It's been very helpful reading your posts on here as I was still a little unconvinced that was the cause of my problems.  Most people seem to have acid reflux and I don't have any, which is why an endoscopy wasn't my GP's first investigation, but I do have a burning sensation around my rib area and up my spine ( I was convinced I had gall stones but scans didn't reveal anything).  I also seem to be opening my bowels 2 or 3 times a day sometimes and have a lot of wind so wonder if there's an element of food intolerance too.  I do know that a couple of mornings when I wake up feeling/ being sick (nearly always starts in the morning)  I've usually had something cream/ cheese based the day before.  I can no longer drink alcohol as that makes me sick.  I think possibly high fat food such as pate, duck and some pastries have an affect too.  Will be so glad to get to GP and see what he has to say.

Hi Tracey,I was diagnosed over 3 years ago with HH and ulcers,I,ve been on omeprozole ever since and constantly feel nauseas but have very little acid reflux, they call it silent reflux.I,m waiting to have two tests done were they put chubes down your nose one in the stomache to test the acid and one goes near the osophogus to test the muscle that works the food down.what baffles me is that the specialist couldn,t understand why I got nausea,s,he said that had nothing to do with the HH or acid yet when I look at peoples letters on here almost all get nausea or sickly feelings, yet he,s convinced it,s something else causing it.hope all goes well when you see the doc he will probably put you on antacids for a while to see how you go on.

Most interesting- I had no reflux, either.   I did have pressure around my heart area, so thought that I was having a heart attack.    At the present time I am going through some depression because after having the surgery on December 22nd, it is taking me so long to get to feeling better.    And some strange things seem to be happening-- I woke up this morning with a burning sensation above my right eye.   My husband said that perhaps some shampoo that I had used wasn't rinsed off properly.    Then, also had a brief period of pain around my left groin area.   After I had a BM, it seems to have gone away.

i had the same problems with eating fatty foods. I would get diarrhea and vomiting after eating them. I had soreness on both sides under my rib cage. I thought I had gall stones also and was tested for that. I got some very sharp pains in the abdomen that woke me at night, almost felt like a heart attack. I never had acid reflux ( heartburn). When I had a CT scan they found I had a paraesophageal hiatus hernia. I started to lose weight and had trouble with gas . I then had an endoscopy and was sent to a thoracic surgeon who did the surgery . It has made a world of difference and I feel much better. I'm surprised the nurse told you your results, they won't do that in Canada, only your doctor will discuss your results with you.

    Hello Tracey,

If you want some immediate relief from your heart burn see your pharmacist particularlarly if you cannot get a doctors appointment My doctor prescribed extra strength gaviscon liquid to relieve my symptoms relating to hatius hernia and small bowel hernia you can buy this preparation over the counter so if you visit an out of hours chemist while waiting to see your doctor you may find this helpful you coul also try ringing the NHS 111 service

    best wishes.

Hi Tracey, sorry you have been diagnosed with HH it^s really not a nice thing to suffer from, I had a endoscopy back in July and mine is a small HH and I also get a lot of pain in my back down my spine so although I feel sorry for you I thought I was the only one with this back and rib pain. Doc sent me for ultra sound for gall stones and that was all clear, went fo see him yesterday and he sent me for back and chest xray and blood tests so waiting for those results. Your doc may put you on lansoprazole or omeprozole and you do need to look at your diet. Hope you go on ok and I do realy feel for you

Hi Everyone.  Thanks for all of your replies.  Was very surprised to see them all and good to know I'm not alone in this.  It is amazing how many people don't necessarily have the 'normal' symptoms but also lots of other things too. Felt very nauseaus all day yesterday again but think I can identify the cause.  I've already noticed that rich creamy food doesn't agree with me.  Me went out for a belated Christmas meal yesterday with a large group of people.  I ordered my meal about 6 months ago and decided to be sensible and have seabass for my main course.  When it arrived it had potatoes on the plate in a thick creamy sauce!   Stupidly, I ate them and so am sure that's why I was ill yesterday.  I'll just have to get into the habit of asking more questions when we eat out. Will give an update once I've been to visit the GP.  Have a good week everyone.
