NHS refuse to repair - anyone else?

Hi all, I'm just reaching out to see how many people out there had difficulty getting referred to a consultant to get an incisional hernia repaired? I'm sure I can't be the only one out there. I've been told the Commisionibg Guidelines say no referral as my hernias not problematic enough. I'm going back to see a different GP and will lie and say it's causing discomfort. I'm only on my 30s and the thought of having this for years (or not getting treated until there's a medical emergency) terrifies me. I'm thoroughly depressed about it all! So has anyone else been refused a referral and any suggestions? Thank you all

Hi florabora, I really feel for you and understand exactly how you feel , I had abdominal incisional hernia repaired 4th Dec 2014 , March 2015 it had popped out again so GP referred back to surgeon who repaired it in dec, i really hope he will repair it because I hate it I have to wear loose tops dress,s etc , and like you say it will only get bigger if l left, I would go and see another gp if I where you and tell them how you feel about it , I will let you know how I get on I go on 5th aug , I wish you good luck and hope you get somewhere when you go back to docs. Thanks Christine. Know what you mean about loose tops, I sometimes look 6 months pregnant. I'm trying to lose weight, as I hear that helps. I've bought a belt thing but the thought of wearing it makes me feel physically sick..I may end up paying myself to get it fixed if I get no joy from the NHS. No idea how much it will cost though 😕 good luck, sorry you're going through the mill with your hernia. X

I hear you loud and clear, for every surgery I have had to fight for it and that's not right.  Dr.s know I have a sliding hernia and who cares, it's their crappy attitude.  Had to fight for 5 years to figure what was wrong with me. Found I have sliding hernia, hardening of arteries, acid reflux, gall stone.  So I had to beg and cry to have the gallbladder removed that took 2 years of fighting with doctors, then I had unexpected hysterectomy.  I had two surgeries in under 3 months.  Welcome to the great canadian health care system.  We pay for our health care through our taxes and are treated poorly.

I hope you can get it repaired,  but dont let any old surgeon touch it get the best do your internet research, you can have your choice of surgeon, but first get your gp referral., You need a specialist hernia surgeon not a general ior colorectal surgeon, their stats are on the internet.,
