On Monday morning at around 3.00 a.m my son started having a high fever. That's when I gave him paracetamol thinking his fever would go down. But around 4.30 a.m he started having a seizure, he's eye's were rolling up ND he couldn't breath. The next thing I knw he just passed out. I was so scared taught I was loosing him. We rushed to the hospital and that's when we were admitted. They took blood sample. But they said nothing came up. At around 2.00 p.m they had just given him medicine but the fever was still going up. That's when he had another seizure less than a minute. Which is when they told me that my son has febrile convulsion. Which is when they started giving him epilex ( sodium valproate oral solution. The next day we were discharged. But since we got back home we need to give him paracetamol every for hour cause the fever is still there. Any advice please.? ( and note that he has also been coughing)

Hey,
i don't know a great deal about this but seizures can be a sign of swelliing on the brain, like meningitis. Does he have a rash? I don't want to scare you but it may be an idea to take him back to A & E and get them to do scans. It could be a nasty virus combined with febrile convulsion but it's best to get him checked. Good luck!

That is very scary. I am sorry to hear.
Definitely keep the fever down and check it regularly.
These seem febrile convulsions, but as to why he has those fevers is a mystery.
If it was a viral infection, there is hardly any help than symptomatic, but you need to keep the fever within limits, pretty sure this is the best thing to do right now even just symptomatic. Also offer to drink, fever makes you loose a lot of fluids, just offer, little sips go a long way, no force.
I am a bit startled that they discharged you without offering explanations as to why the high fever. (Bacterial should be excluded as it would indicate antibiotic treatment with such fevers.)
Good luck and lots of nerves staying up another night on watch.
It is very draining, I hope he has overcome this infection (?) with high fevers soon and shows getting better and less high fevers.
Especially young children tend to react with very high fevers upon even so called 'normal' cold viri (not influenza).
Have they offered the possibility of aternating between paracetamol and ibuprofen within their max dose to get hold of the fever?
Usually paracetamol has a 4 hour break, but so has ibuprofen.
In high fever situations the max dose of both (they don't interfere with each other) are given alternating. Eg: every two hours, paracetamol, two hours later ibuprofen, two hours later paracetamol again (as it now 4 hours after other paracetamol dose).
Up to daily dose, careful with dose, but we had to do this alternation once too with our child when fever was high and 4 hours of break of fever reducers of only paracetamol was far too long. Paracetamol and ibuprofen can be given alternating and to each's max dose (if not allergic of course or other contraindications). Please ask doc or hospital.
All the best!!!!

Hi wency 66953
That was a bit of an ordeal you and your son went through!.....you don't say how old your son is. I am surprised the hospital sent him home...if he shows signs of stiff neck, vomitting and extreme lethargy he should be taken back to the hospital as this could be signs of meningitis....but if you are worried anyway about him do not hesitate to take him back to the hospital....thats what the hospital is there for to help sick people.....best wishes....
