pain with hiatus hernia

Hi everyone I was told that I had a 5cm sliding hiatus hernia after having left sided abdominal pain (no heartburn or anything...things often repeat on me and have to make myself burp to get rid of the stuff repeating).pain has sometimes been so severe I've had to go to hospital with no conclusion.other times dull or stabbing . pain never on standing bizarrely. I've spoken to two gastrointestinal doctors who have both told me hernias do NOT cause pain what soever...One in three people have them but are generally found accidentally and MOST people have no so toms whatsoever

Hi I to have a sliding hernia the only thing I have is phlegm in my throat , no pain fortunatly as some of the people on here seem to suffer really badly , I was told not to eat tomatoes oranges , no fizzy pop ,only drink it's when it goes flat , I'm taking tablets & gavascon does nt get rid of it but after 3 years  I'm getting used to it , I am also intolerant to milk all of a sudden so can't av a drink of milk either ! Don't think this will help you but at least you are not alone , Dr would nt operate either said my symptoms were nt severe enough

Have you been checked for gall stones, I was diagnosed with both a hernia and gall stones and the pain you're describing sounds like my gall stones x x

Each person is different. I never had any heartburn either. The most comman hiatal hernia is the sliding. I would ask your GI SPECIALIST to give you a endoscopy. You might have GERD. (Which can cause your esphogas to become inflamed). This is what I had. The valve from esphogas to the stomach is not closing properly or may not close at all- This is GERD.

You have what is called "silent acid reflux", which means you have no heartburn.

You should try to get a real GI SPECIALIST,

Who knows what they are doing, because you can have pain with your hiatal hernia.

I would suggest to get an endoscopy ASAP,

Just to find out what is going on. The RX medication did not work for me.

It caused my blood pressure to go to 190

and caused my hair to start falling out.

These are the side effects of the RX meds fir acid reflux. New studies also are finding the RX meds for acid reflux are causing kidney problems. I had to have surgery to repair my valve and hiatal hernia, because of the GERD and RX meds problems.

Please get a better GI SPECIALIST and gave an endoscopy ASAP.

Also do some research to see what Good GI SURGEN are available in your area. It took me 2 years to find the best in my city. God Bless you.

Ask your doctors if they got their medical degrees from a box of crackerjack.  I have a small sliding hiatus hernia, and like you, have no heartburn, but experience moderate to severe chest pain (predominantly on right side) and usually accompanied bypain in right throat.  The pain is most prominant while sitting upright, especially when belted into a car seat, and is never present when standing or lying flat on my back.  My best guess is that the chest pain is caused  when the sliding hernia squeezes into the hiatus and puts pressure onto the vagus nerve which also shares the hiatus.  The vagus nerve is a wandering nerve that innervates an amazing amount of tissues in the abdomen, chest, and throat, and I believe the pressure from the sliding hernia is felt as referred pain in these remote loacations.   I also believe that for the vast majority of patients with hiatus hernias, the overwhelming symptom is heartburn, which is severe enough to mask any referred pain from pressure on the vagus nerve.
