Painful hip replacement

Posted , 6 users are following.

I had a total hip replacement nearly 6 years ago, my issue is that I have developed lower back pain, my back locks and is very painful, but then today, I have pain around the back of my upper thigh/bum like a bruised feeling. I have had groin pain for a while and strange sensations but have been told it's fine but the bruise feeling is new. Anyone else experienced this?

Hello Laura I have had similar back pain. Before my THR in November, the previous 2 years I had 5 occasions when just leaning down to load dishwasher etc. my back went into spasm. I couldnt straighten up for about a week each time very painful to move about or get in and out of bed. I have plates and screws in my pelvis from a traffic accident  22 years ago. This left me with chronic pain and I had been on crutches when walking.  I never had a problem at all with my back so was surprised when it went into spasm. I have been given exercises which I do to strengthen the muscles in the lower back across the pelvis. I am assuming that because of the way I walked my muscles became weak. If you lie on your back and pull your knees up put your hands on stomach.Put a small cushion between your knees and squeeze them as you Lift your bottom off the floor/bed and hold for 10seconds.  Repeat 10 times. Next turn over and lean with hands on floor/bed and lean on your knees (doggy fashion) keep back straight,   pull in your stomach muscles and hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times. This after a week gave me a flat stomach a bonus, but also strengthens lower back.

Unfortunately my thr has not been successful replacement ok but surgeon has damaged my femoral nerve.  I still get a lot of groin pain which I have had from accident plus other pain. So I was better off before.  Perhaps you should ask Dr for referral to specialist  you may have begun to wear out your hip being young and active but probably should be checked anyway. I hope my reply helps. I have not had spasm for about a year and still do exercises so maybe it has helped.  I don't do them regular though!

Thank you Debbie, it's more the bruised feeling that I am worried about, I have a physio appointment booked for my back and other hip. I had a ceramic on ceramic replacement, I suppose you get a little worried when it comes to our fake hips, I will speak to my gp in the morning x

My back was painfull after THR .. After X-rays and tests it was several issues . Scoliosis, disc degeneration due to arthritis in lower back.........I decided to GP the PT ROUTE .

heled me tremendously. Strengthened core and back muscles to help support bones and the hips.

Rehab after back surgery is hard on the back and other joints struggling to just get up and down from bed .

Check with UR GP sometimes X-rays can tell the story. Once the diagnosis is made then UR on UR way to treatment.

I will try to make this as plain as possible. When you have a hip replacement, you have a right to expect it to return you to "normal" function unless told otherwise. That is, normal function without pain. W\hat was the THR for if not to eliminate the terrible pain you were experiencing? You will read throuighout this forum, numerous contributors who have had seriious post op pain but were told more or less that this is normal and they had to live with it. That is disingenuous to say the least. Those words constitute an admission that the surgery has failed to achieve its goal.

Laura, I don't know what causes your pains, I'm not a doctor. But I do know, as any lawyer would tell you, that you have a right to demand that the problem be corrected.

In my experience, the types of pain you describe are consistent with a femoral stem micromovement or the onset of loosening.

Pain in the thigh and groin is usually associated wiht femoral stem micro loosening or infection around the stem. Both conditions are very serious and you can expect either of them to worsen. Also, don't be surprised that xrays show nothing wrong, but the fact that you have the pain proves that something IS wrong. I finally had to travel 600 miles to another city to get help. Surgeons here were all members of the same group and would not help me.

You should also determine what type of prosthesis was used and whether it was subject to any known faults.

Hi Laura sorry to here you are having this problem. I understand exactly what you are going through as I have the same problem I had thr in 2014 and now am dealing with scoliosis of the back because the implant is too long.

I also have severe pain in my muscle over the hip which is relieved only by straightening my leg. Hope you can get the help you need.

I have had ca MRI several X-rays and am scheduled for a Ct scan hope they can find something to help me.

Laura43291 I have developed scoliosis since my THR in 2014 it is so bad I can not sleep through the night and can not walk very long. I am in constant pain. The Dr's refuse to help as they do not want to touch another Dr's screw up after using too long of an implant. One Dr suggested using heel lifts 1 in plus is my discretion on my length.
