Pectus Excavatum

45 years old and I've just discovered I have Pectus Excavatum!

I don't mean my chest has suddenly sunk, but that it is a recognised medical condition and other people have it too. I feel like I've come out of the wilderness and joined the human race. If you're reading this because you too have PE you'll know all about isolation, depression and social exclusion and yet to the medical world any corrective measures are regarded as purely "cosmetic".

So, I've decided to do something about it. I don't fancy the Ravitch technique or the Nuss procedure so I've opted for the Vacuum Bell. It's currently winging its way from the United States and I'll be posting regular updates. Please feel free to share comments or ask questions

I don't know if you are aware of it, but there is a UK Pectus Excavatum forum.

I was 50 before I discovered that what I had was P E. I am now 62 . Mine is not as severea case as some but it has been bad enough to make me breathless and reduce my lung capacity to 68% of what it should be for my height, as given on a respirometer test I had about 4 yrs. Had I been aware when I was a lot younger that it was a recognised medical condition, I guess I would have gone for corrective surgery. I would have taken out a bank loan and gone to, say, the USA to get it done. The medical establishment in the UK is generally quite ignorant about this condition and the awful effects it has on those who have it. GPs generally are not aware of the condition, let alone knowing about its effects.

    Hi H.E.

I had to remove the url as when I followed it a "dodgy" site came up (you are the 100 000 visitor, click here etc). Other users can message you if they want the site.

Yes, fair enough - I forgot that raw links on forum boards don't go down very well. Sorry about that.

Is it permissible to 'spell' the link ? eg triple double-u_dot_domain_name_dot_org.

The forum I wanted to refer to is very good. If this isn't acceptable, is there any other way to refer people to other forums specialising in only the condition being discussed. ?
