Possibly Angina, but not 100% sure.

Hello,

Sorry for posting such an undetailed title.  About 3 weeks ago I went to my PCP for tightness in the center of my chest that I had for about 3 days.  I could still play sports and the pain didn't bother me, which I thought was odd.  I noticed that this pain started after having a stressful weekend.

I told the Dr. that it felt like it was GERD and he told me to take some over the counter medication and I had a virus-(since I had a very low-grade fever).  I took the medication and it didn't seem to help.  So I went and got some low dose aspirin and that made the pain go away within about 30 minutes.

I am a little over-weight-(about 35 lbs), and I am on cholesterol medication. I have been taking the low-dose aspirin every night since this pain has happened.  I have been taking my BP about 3-5 times a day for a week and have been averaging 128/80, if that helps?

There are times where I don't want to do anything at night, so I just eat dinner and lay right down, and then go to sleep about 3 hours later.

A question I have is if it is angina, then how do I stop that scary pain from happening again, and what do I need to do make it better?

    Hi Golffor,

Reading your symptoms, they could mean a few conditions and the only way to get an accurate answer is to see your doctor who can then run the appropriate tests. You mentioned that you are on cholesterol medication, How long have you been taking this medication ? this could be the culprit, has an angiogram been done if you have high cholesterol ? Also you mentioned that you lye down immedietly after dinner, this could cause your pain as well, where your food isn't being digested properly because of laying down, reflux....sometimes antacids don't help reflux, another thing that could be causing your discomfort is ulcers, but one would think more tummy pains than chest pain. If aspirin is taking away the pain it's kind of pointing to another couple of scenarios, aspirin is a pain reliever in conditions like colds , viruses , sore throats and general aches and pains, aspirin is also used to thin the blood so your heart can pump the blood more easily, Aspirin generally doesn't relieve angina pain, Depending on which type of angina you may have the common types generally show up on an ECG ( EKG ) and generally but not always involve a blockage in a coronary artery, Prinzmetal Angina is one example, you can have normal , clean, un obstructed coronary arteries yet the arteries and blood vessels go into uncontrollable spasms giving moderate to severe chest pain.

As I have said, talk to your doctor, he or she will do the basics first , ECG, blood pressure , etc etc, they should also make referals for blood  and imaging tests, . You ask how do you stop the scary pain, generally the GTN or the little pill under the tongue keeps angina and it's pain in check, sometimes if it's a bad attack GTN won't alleviate the pain and that's when you should be going into the emergency department . Also there are medications that can control "normal " angina and lifestyle changes, I say " normal " because it's easily diagnosed, the run of the mill angina, where as people can be healthy and develop Prinzmetal angina, Syndrome X  and MVD , these and probably a couple of others I may have forgotten are hard to diagnose unless you have a doctor or specialist that has the thorough knowledge to think of these conditions rather than the types that throw their hands up and say....look I / we don't know what's wrong.

      Hi Samuels,

Thanks for the response.  To answer your cholesterol question.  I have been taking it about 11 and 1/2 months. Before I started my cholesterol medication I was at a total of 251 with my LDL at 185.  After 4 months of being on the medication, my total changed to 145 and my LDL went to 87.  I have another Dr. appoint scheduled in approximately 2 and 1/2 weeks for my annual physical.  I will end up requesting a sleep study as well as a stress test.

When I went to the Dr. about 3 weeks ago he did the normal heart attack test that a doctor would do-(or what I would say is normal), he asked me to take breaths and then I was breathing normally.  My blood pressure was a little higher than normal-(120/82), but other than that and the fever....everything seemed to be ok.

      Hi golffor,

Exscuse my ignorance I'm from the land down under and your cholesterol numbers don't mean a thing to me as we use a different  measuring system, well the way we number it by the looks, Normal cholesterol is 4 for a male and 6 for a female , anything above either is considered elevated, mine use to be 18, was put on lipid medications but unfortunately my body can't tolerate them, over the last few years I have managed to hover around the 7.5 - 9 levels.... smile our numbers probably don't mean a thing to you either.... I have been told my LDL is to elevated to get a proper number , I have the familial hyperlipidemia, this is where my weird lipid profile comes in apparently, due to LDL being so high that they can't get a number.

Wow wish I had blood pressure like that, 120/82 is perfectly normal , that's a healthy text book reading smile . Yes sleep apnea can put an awful strain on the heart, I have to use a CPAP machine as I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea, My partner told me I sound like a freight train and I never believed her and as the years went on I started waking up gasping for air, mentioned it to my doctor who then organised a sleep study....wow.... very surprising, smile my partner wasn't pulling my leg after all, Goodluck with your test, Yes a stress test would be a good start to see if there is anything wrong in the heart area.

Goodluck and I hope you can get the 100 % answers you need.
