Post-cataract Surgery Issues...

Posted , 6 users are following.

Within a span of 20 days gap, i(40-year-0ld) had undergone cataract surgery for both the eyes between Dec 5, 2016 and Dec 20, 2016.In the right my surgeon implanted Alcon monofocal lens (SN60WF 22.5D) for distance vision; and the left eye with Alcon monofocal lens (SN60WF 23.0 D). My surgeon, said since the other eye was set for distance vision, let's keep the right for LITTLE NEAR VISION. In spite of my concerns, she(surgeon) said, it was only little change power and that i would be doing good. This was the scenario. Now i have been facing the following problems.

My surgeon says operations are successful. However, the problems are haunting me...

Left eye:

1. For the left eye: Even 3/12 eye sight is achieved, except able to read the fine  print if i bring the book/mobile/laptop closer to me.

2. Unable to watch /view the TV clearly that is about 3 feet away.

3. Left peripheral vision is obstructed

4. From the day 1 after the operation, i am seeing a filmy white layer slightly above, left-side,and  below the pupil of my eye.

5. If i glance at left-side, the layer is being pushed further left-side and able to view clearly. If i turn eye to the right-side, the filmy white layer or a black shadow obstructing my vision.

6. I am feeling like two vertical black cresents on the left -side of the left eye, and the right-side of the right eye.

Right eye:

1. For the right eye: Vision seems to be 6/12. Cannot read the fine print.

2. A white filmy layer is obstructing my peripheral vision from the day 1 after the surgery.

3. Seeing a black crecent shaped mark on the right side of my eye.

4. Sometimes, light rays are glittering on the top portion of both the eyes.

5. Edge of lens on top and right-side of the eye is visible.

What would be my problem"?

1. I feel that i am neither good with near vision or distance vision. How would it be corrected? My surgeon says no problem with eyes, and operation went on well. No Retinal issues, she claims.

2. When would i get rid off heaviness of eyes at peripherals?

3. Is something wrong with the power of monofocal lens that are being implanted into my eyes?

4. Would these black crescents disappear by any chance?

5. How long i have to see the edges of lens?

6. Are these problems because of the inexperience of the surgeon who has operated?

I wonder if you could help me the next course of action to regain my eye-sight wit the least or no-side effects.

Thanks in advance.

When did the doctor tell you that. At the time of surgery. Many of

Your symptoms certainly would give me pause for alarm. I would

In the end. If I was not satisfied with the doctor go to another doctor.

I had one doctor that saw me and another doctor that did the surgery.

And had so many scheduled visits as part of the follow up plan.

My husband almost lost his visit because his doctor when he went into

Opthmologist and his doctor did not catch. My husband went on our

Cruise instead. He drove an hour and a half and right before he got on the ship

I realized he could not see the gas sign that was about two foot

in high. Needless to say. He had much more of an adventure then I

Did. When we got back his doctor immediately sent him to another

Specialist and they were able to repair his retina. Take care hope you

Find the answers you seek and line the lawyers up. Because if you

Lose your sight sounds like you might have a good case.

Hi Greenhorm, At 40 you are so very young to be having such problems with your vision, I didnt know that you could have cataracts so young.

Have you asked the surgeon all the queries that you have stated above, I know you said she said your eyes were fine, obviously they are not and she should know why you are having these symptoms.  An optician is also an option they are very good at knowing why you are having these symptoms but the surgeon is the first port of call.

The only good thing about your symptoms is that its only a month and there is a good chance that they will improve naturally

Please keep in contact and let us know the outcome and how you are

    Regards Agnes

Thank you, Agnes. I wish that I could get a better sight soon.I will get appointment from another opthamalogist soon.

But with both the eyes opened, i am still able to read news paper, work on my laptop. Main worry is regarding the blinkers at the periphereals of both of my eyes, and a white filmy layer above and side of the pupil. I don't know whether the surgeon thought it was not necessary to clean it up apprehending some complicaitons or the surgeon's inexperience made me to pay the price. I will keep you posted. Thank you once again.

I woud suggest an immediate examination by a retinal specialist.  You want to make sure your retina is OK.  Not all refractive surgeons are experienced at detecting retinal issues.  Go to an Emergency Department if you cannot get an immediate appointment with a retinal specialist.

I had the cataract removed from my left eye on 18th November.   The following day when I removed the dressing I was amazed at how clear and bright everything appeared.   However I noticed a dark crescent at the extreme l.h. edge of my eye and immediately consulted the Ophthalmic A & E.   I was told I was seeing the edge of the IOL and that it would resolve by itself or my brain would adjust to it.    On looking at the Internet I found this was  Negative Dysphotopsia, something which occurs in a number of cases and it is not understood why certain patients get this.

It also says that if it occurs in one eye it is likely to occur in the other.     When I saw my consultant he confirmed it was photopsia and to wait 6 months to see if it resolved.    I read there are things that can be done to try to correct this but I don't think I would want another operation.    Most of the time I am unaware of it but it does annoy me at times.   My vision in that eye is excellent and  I am told I can now legally drive.    With my new spectacles I can almost read the bottomline on the chart which means I can now read a book without additional magnification.

My consultant is keen for me to have the second eye done but I am not so sure.   I have already lost central vision in my rt eye due to Wet Mac. Degeneration years ago and I am currently having injections for this in my left eye so I feel I will leave well alone for the time being.     At 87 I think I want to quit while I'm ahead.

Hi Marion you sound like you are doing very well so well done, if you are fine with just one eye done then I think you should leave the other for the time being, go with what the surgeon suggests and they know best and woulnt do an op unless it was necessary.

Please keep us all up to date with how you are getting on and what you decide

      Regards Agnes
