Prednisolone is playing havoc with my Blood sugar.I try to reduce but am stuck on 8mg.I fall asleep a dozen times a day instantaneously after meals.Blood sugar 10-15 most of the day.I'm lifeless and exhausted and just getting through the day is a challenge.I have been Diabetic 30 years and PMR for 3years.Also have hiatal and inguinal hernias plus enlarged prostate and a pacemaker for 'sick sinus syndrome'
Is there a substitute for Prednisolne? I believe there is a drug used for asthma which may prescribed instead of Pred.I am desperate for a solution. Help!!

Hello , I am having the same problem ?? I have PMR and am on 15mg of Prednisole .I wake in the morning and levels are between 10 and 15 , crave sugary things , carbs and chocolate.Just want to sleep as levels get high .Even when eating sensibly they are high , There should be something else to take other than Pred ! Sorry I haven't got the answer .

There are no known reliable substitutes for steroid treatment for PMR, but given your medical history, you could broach the subject with your doctor. Provided they can come up with a non-drug solution, that would be the best way to go. Othewise see if there is something you could modify in your diet, although I expect as a long-time diabetic you may already be doing what you can.
I had exactly the same problem with blood sugar rising when I started pred. My answer was to virtually cut out all grains, especially refined ones, and sugar, honey, jam and the like. I was advised to always eat some protein when I had carbohydrates. As my pred dose came down so did the blood sugar. Never got to diabetic range, but uncomfortably close. Side effect - didn't gain weight!
Did not deny myself completely, I enjoyed the occasional small piece of high quality dark chocolate, and if there was a birthday or some other celebration, having bakers in the family there were always too many sweet treats. But in my daily life I was quite strict and it seems to have worked.
Also, at the level of 8 mg your adrenal glands may be expected to start working again and they may just be a bit slow getting started. That could be contributing to your fatigue.

At 8mgs you are at a very difficult time, the adrenal glands could be attempting to kick in and this does cause fatigue, it most certainly did with me.
for you more so than the rest of us, controlling your diet is a must. Cut out as many carbs as you possibly can especially empty carbs, cakes, biscuits, sweets. Other carbs, eg, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes keep to a minimum. I only have one carb a day. Eat plenty of vegetables and protein.
i wish you all the best. Regards, tina

Thankyou all for your words of encouragement. I will just have to soldier on, and hope my adrenal glands intervene in the process. It's so worrying when BS is so high. I feel I'm a stroke waiting to happen.
