TEN YRS AGO, I GOT MY FIRST SEVERE VERTAGO ATTACK. IT LASTED 13 WEEKS. I COULDNOT DRIVE,GO TO THE GROCERY STORE, CUT MY GRASS OR DRIVE A SCHOOL BUS WHICH WAS MY JOB AT THE TIME. THE DOCTORS SAID IT WOULD GO AWAY IN 2-3 WEEKS. WERE THEY WRONG. I HAD DIZZY SPELLS HAD A HARD TIME WALKING. NOW AFTER 10 YEARS LATER I STILL HAVE SOME OF THE AFTER EFFECTS. AND THEY WILL NEVER GO AWAY. WHEN I AM SITTING OR LAYING DOWN NO DIZZYNESS, BUT SOON AS I GET UP AND WALK I GET A DIZZY FEELING AND LOOSE SOME OF MY BALANCE (24/7) ALL THE TIME. NOW I HAVE POLYMYALGIA AND ON 7MG/DAY. THE POLYMYALGIA IS FINE NO PAIN BUT THE VERTAGO IS HELL. IM 74 AND RETIRED, LOVE TO TRAVEL BUT I CANT BECAUSE IM AFFRAID TO DRIVE ALONE AND CANT WALK FAR. THE DOCTORS SAY I HAVE A PERMINATE INNER EAR PROBLEM AND THAT EFFECTS MY BALANCE AND CAUSE MY DIZZYNESS. DOES ANYONE HAVE A CURE?     WALTER98524

As you have not mentioned that you have tried this, all things being equal I would suggest vestibular rehabilitation, to help you use more of your vision and sense of touch to compensate. Vestibular implants may still be in the experimental stage (Herman Kingma, The Netherlands).

Hi, My name is Deanna and I am interrupting your conversation but this is something I actually just heard about it. I see you are a Dr., but my occupational health at work suggested a physiotherapist. From what I have researched - they are short courses. Would you say they are qualified enough or should I be searching for your specialty - I would have to search in a larger city. The Dr's keep sending me to an ENT specialist. Thanks for your help 😆

A physiotherapist will do, but they need to have proven experience.

Could you answer a question please. I've had dizzy seems brain shifting movements for 7months. No problem with ct scan. Trying to do vestibular exercises but I have days were the sensations are worse. I'm not on medication was on beta histamine. I take 15mg of cinazine travel sickness pill when it's like this. Can I take them on long term basis? I also take naxproxen for migraines when I've overdone things is this ok too. Also what is it when we lay down and get flashing sensation in our heads. Can it be possibe to be cured from this in time.

Hi thanks for your reply. I dont have BppV just a visual disorientation so cant watch much tv computers etc. Get sensations in my head like swaying feeling and more on the right then left.  No ear infections. Hearing is good and Ive had a pressure test and fine.  I generally have good balance and keep fit and healthy.  I had a pacemaker put in in february for heart block type 2 but thats fine and no problems.  I have tried betahistamine and it doesnt work for me.  Cinnazine works better and lessen the sensations.  I get a popping sensation when I swallow and that drives me mad at times.  My jaw is ok its coming from inside my ear.  If something is inflammed then surely the course of action would be anti-immflamortary medication? Like Labrythisis etc?  Sorry my spelling is rubblish.  My eyes are straining to do this . They have been checked at the opticians and classed ok.  So like many of us here our lives are limited by what we can do.  Any possible suggestions would be appreciated.  Thank you

Geez God bless you - I have no clue and I have been dealing with vertigo for years. What is your exact dx? Did you mean to say permanent inner ear problem? I have the same feeling but also when I lay down or move my head/ turn to the left. I can't do any exercises where I am laying down because when I try to get up I am dizzy. I have BBPV and possibility Menierres. But , I have not heard of vertigo that only happens when you stand. Could it be environmental? An allergy? Blood pressure problems? I do work with a lady that was prescribed gravel every night before she goes to bed - that helps her . I take SERC prescription as needed but as needed. I remember my chiropractor said don't sleep with a fan over your head and move your legs around before getting up and then get up slowly - that helps with your circulation. He had thought it might play a role in my dizziness. Try what my Dr said before and good luck!
