Hi there

I have been told that i have a Bicuspid Aortic Valve with a mild leak and a Aoartic root dilation of 4.2cm. This condition has been passed on to me by my mother and my older brother has just died from a aortic dissection.  I am 34 years of age 173cm tall and weigh 68kg. I am very active cyclist which likes to push the limits when riding.

I have been told not to do any heavy lifting, no more than 20kg weights, but i would like to know about pushing your heart rate to maxmium? what heart rates are safe for me? what heart rate should i not go over?? just some general guide when exercising? do you need to look after yourself with foods aswell?? is there foods that affect this condition? I just want to look after myself.

Any information would be great

Hi Steve I was diagnosed with bicuspid aortic valve and ascending aorta of 4.2cm. I am a runner and cycle a bit also. When I was diagnosed last year my consultant told me moderate exercise only which had me devasted but when my yearly ct and echo were good he told me carry on as normal just mod exercise. I continue to jog not run competitively like I used to. I don't let my heart or breathing get too heavy its a big step down for me but I'm just glad that I can do a little bit. I don't go to gym anymore but I have two children one only two that he told me was no harm to lift, live your life as normal as u can he told me. I try to eat healthy but was a little bold at Christmas! The whole exercise and running was a blow to me and took me a while but I'm slowly getting used of my new way of doing things! Just thankful that I found out that I had this condition when I did I pushed my gp to send me for tests wen I felt things weren't quite right and good thing I did.

Thank you for that Casey, that is helpful, sounds like you had to tone back from being competitive, that would be hard. Thats what i thought i would do aswell. i have been doing a lot of bike racing and training really hard, so the challenge is to slow down and make the heart not work as hard. At least i can still get out there and ride, but at a slower pace. Did your specialist mention anything about maximum heart rate? or level that you should not go past? do your wear a heart rate monitor when you go running? thank you for replying

Hi Steve no I don't wear a heart monitor and my consultant never mentioned about maximum heart rate. I try not to over do things I used to do weekly parkruns but dropped out because I'd b going alot slower & trying to keep up to everyone and was getting really p*ssed off!! I was a regular on the roads and suddenly stopped over nite people just presumed I was pregnant that used to get on my nerves! I have only told family and a few close friends! Anywas I did do a 70k cycle few weeks after my diagnosis which was fine. I got a bit more courage & confidence back with time just do things at my own pace. My next echo and ct in July will tell more and I must ask about the max heart rate and maybe invest in a monitor.
