Reflux (I guess you would call it that) when eating; my throat seems to cloose up.

If I did not know better, i'd say I was having a heart attack; but I've been through it many times and seem to come out of it fine.  Here is how it comes on:  I canb e eating, generally at a restraunt with my wife and I'll first develope hickups, then tremendous pain in the center of my chest.  At this point, I'm virtually gasping for breath and feel like I need to throw up.  When I do get to a place where I can throw up; i get nothing but white frothy foam, no food.  These attacks can last from 5 minutes to 4 hours.  Needless to say, my wife has had to finish her meal, pay the tab and come out to find me leaning agains a building and throwing up white froathy foam and slime, no food.

I don't believe the doctors understand what is going on. They have had me on 40 MG (once a day) of Omeprazole for a couple of years; and just recently an ENT doctor switched me to Nexium and upped the dose to 40MG morning and 40 MG evening.  I'm really scared about what these meds are doing to my body; anybody have similar problems and/or suggestions.

Do you have a lump like feeling in your throat?

Chery, when I have an attack, I have a huge lump feeling and chest pains,  I can't talk or swallow; alll I can do is throw up froath and fleem until it finally eases on it on.  The 5 min. attack are not too bad; but the ones lasting for several hours are really scary.

I sent you a private message with a link to look up Eosinophilic Esophagitis. My brother just went through this and after a number of doctors he went to the Mayo Clinic and found resolution within minutes. I am going through similar GERD stuff but have not had tests done yet. I was just put on 40gm Omeprazole at this point. I am still having the lump in my throat, some phlegm the Omeprazole helps me not feel sick so I can eat but I am still waiting for tests to be done. I am having allergy tests done on Tuesday the 26 and will report my findings then. My biggest symptom is I can't breathe deep, along with the lump in my throat, and lots of phlegm,  I gag and choke from the phlegm. As minimal as this sounds many of my brother's issues stemmed from food allergies. The Mayo gave him a diet to follow and it helped him within a short time. He was off the Omeprazole, rather quickly and follows the diet to keep the eosinophilic esophagitis under control. He also has the many of the GERD symptoms.

The diet the Mayo put him on, is the 6 food elimination diet,  It is easy to look up also, just put in,  6 FOOD ELIMINATION DIET.  Good Luck

He too could not eat without throwing up and lots and lots of phlegm.

Before I had the surgery I too was on Nexium 40mgs. 1xday., before that it was aciphex 40mg 2xday that made it worse.  The nexium got me through the wait for surgery w/o those chest pains.  My suggestion is to go to a renound gastro dr even if it means 3nd or 3rd opinions.  I went thru several myself, finally found one that suggested the ph probe, motility study for 24 hrs u go home w/ the monitor....Actually it sounds worse than it is trust me,  That will tell you everything wish i had a dr recommend it 30 years prior to all this pain.  Then he may suggest an endoscopy as mine did, and barium swallow as well.  If your in as much pain as you say you will do anything to get this resolved as I did.  I have not eaten red sauce in 30 years, trigger foods i would avoid.  The froth that u speak of yes i did have some of that, alot of mucous.  Then the cough was getting out of control i slept with a cough drop in my mouth because i would cough to the point of vomitting.  I am 8 weeks post op Monday and all that left, i have my life back again ....not to say this recovery of the Nissen Fundoplication is slow and challenging, but i had a hiaral hernia repair as well.  But, it is becoming well worth it in the end as the dr tells me.  I will be able to eat anything and will never take PPI's again, he assured me of that....We are in Massachusetts, if by chance u need a dr. I can suggest an excellent surgeon who has done many of these surgeries with success.  I phoned a patient of his who had the same surgery 12 years ago and she is great today.....please get it checked out....good luck

Liz, thanks for your response.  I must be lucky in a lot of ways, cause I have virtual no pain until one of my attacks hits.  I did have an endoscopy a couple of years ago; but I'm thinking it is about time to request another.  My hearing was already bad and when the reflux starts effecting that, i'm going to find a solution.  What was operation they performed on you?

I think that Liz has given good advice, go see specialist who will investigate with endoscopy and swallowing test along with perhaps barium swallow x-rays. My symptoms were slightly different. I am about to have treament for my Reflux here in the UK it is called STRETTA. .

I too had an endoscopy with a dr who I had for 17 yrs. treating me and she didnt care at all when I kept phoning this past year with pains that mimic a heart attack. She was compromising my health because it got so bad that I could not take medication for whatever I needed it for at the time.  When she did the endoscopy she said it was a sliding one.  Low and behold when I switched Dr.'s he suggested all the tests, and found out 60% of my stomach was acid.  He and his colleagues have not seen this much acid in ones stomach. The acid was backing up into the hernia, which by the way when he operated said it was not sliding.  It went the other way and was quite large.  He performed Nissen Fundoplication as well as Hiatal Hernia repair.  I am 8 weeks post op and coming along...Thank God no more reflux and no more PPI's ever again I was told by him.....If you go on Mayo Clinics web site they show how the surgery is performed.  Good Luck and get a good doctor that is crucial in diagnosing and a good surgeon to persom the task.  One who has done Many of these surgeries, if this is what you need.

If you haven't gone to see an ENT doctor you might really want to consider doing that.  Other than that Omeprazole never helped me either. I'm not on Sucralfate 3X 1mg a day and one Dexilant at night. They seem to give me some relief. I've only been on em for a couple of weeks but I can feel the difference. I was on the others for about 6 years struggleing never got relief. Good luck and I hope this gives you some king of hope. There are answers we just gota find the right one for each of us.
