Reoccurring UTI

Posted , 3 users are following.

I've just finished my 3rd round of antibiotics in the past 5 weeks. 1st Macrobid, then sulfa, and now 10 days of Cipro. I don't feel like any of them completely got rid of it. I used to get a UTI maybe once a year and macrobid always did the trick. I don't want to keep pumping antibiotics in my body😔

Hi Leslie, there are a growing number of us with constant recurring e-coli UTIs (you didn't mention what yours was). The antibiotics are losing their effectiveness and, more and more people (me included) are becoming allergic to the appropriate antibiotics. I have had Cipro in the past but would never take it again unless it was the drug of last resort to keep me alive. I have PMR and wonder if Cipro was a contributory factor to my developing it, having read the masses of warnings on Cipro on the net. So, normally for e-coli, two of the antibiotics that it is sensitive to, are Cefalexin and Nitofurantoin (also called Macrobid I believe). Cefalexin is the only one I can take. However, the traditional dosage is not enough to completely kill off the infection in the body. I have been told that small colonies of the bacteria can survive and will recolonise once the antibiotics have gone from the body. A friend with the same problem did find a specialist who put her on long-term, high doses of Cefalexin and it was successful. In my case I have had urethral dilation performed (day patient in hospital) and it has greatly decreased the number of infections I have had, though still occasionally have one. I believe the stats say that it is highly successful for 70% of women who have it performed.

Firstly it is important to drink a lot of water - around 2 litres per day. Some people say that taking D-mannose is helpful but I know of many who say it does not work (and it is expensive). Cranberry juice is a waste of time. I use a very good probiotic, which is designed specifically to provide the flora required by the intimate area of a women's body, especially after antibiotic use. I take two a day and I really feel it is helpful. I hope some of this is helpful for you. Good luck.

Hi there, This seems to be the common complaint of reocurring, or not clearing up the bacteria.  Have you had a recent culture after taking all the medications? Sometimes even though the bacteria is gone, the bladder can go on feeling a bit inflammed, the fact that you had three different antibiotics, and I have Cipro can cause bladder inflammation....I know when I took it, I felt like my urethra was burning until it was out of my system.....I would get another culture done to see if it has cleared.  I have been battling on and off with this myself, unfortuately the antibiotics that the bacteria I have is sensitive to I am allergic, so I have been doing alternative, and last I did a culture it was gone.  My symptoms come and go I doubt it is completely gone, but it is very low and I hope to keep it that way.  In the summer I am going to an allergist who specializes with antibiotics and I am going to get desensitized to the antibiotics I can't take and hopefully at some point I can clear out all the remaining bacteria.
