Rosace / Seb Derm & Red Nose

Hi all. I am a 40yr old male and have been suffering with Rosacea / Seborrheic Dermatitis since my later teenage years, it has gradually worsened in the last 10. Over the last 10 years I must have spent well over €5000 on consultations, 'treatments' etc and I look at myself today thinking it was all money down the drain. I have been prescribed antibiotics, roaccutane, hydrocortisone, rosex, locoid, skinoren, nizoral, selsun and probably many more!, I have had laser treatment, most recently about 18 months which certainly did more damage than good.

The redness now is very, very prominent on my nose. It has dominated my personal and professional life over these last 10 years, I have lost confidence and it always on my mind. When people meet me they generally rub their noses. Most people are kind and wouldn't actually say anything. I have 2 daughters (8 & 5), yesterday one came home from school and said one of her classmates had asked why her Daddy has a very red nose. this was not the first time It breaks my heart to think that she is going to put up with this at school and have to defend me to the other kids. In the last 6 months the seb derm has been very bad also, mainly around the jaw, on my chin. I have recently started trying washing / soaking my face in dead sea salt which is a great relief initially but doesn't seem to relieve for too long unfortunately. Can anybody recommend anything to me or am I going to be stuck like Rudolph for the rest of my life, I have addressed diet and tried to cut out the usual triggers, if I exercise it gets worse, if I don't exercise it gets worse, if I eat my daily allowance of fruit & veg it gets worse, if I don't it gets worse! It is getting to the stage where I don't want to leave the house for fear of embarrassing my kids. Help please!

Hi. i have also sufferd for a number of years with roacea and like you have tried a number of treatments wich havent worked. My only advice which works for me is to take acnamino tablets and use metrolgel. I only use them when the flare up is really bad. Going to try a new cream that is out, will let you know how it works. Also wear sp 15 cream when out in the day.Hope this helps for now.

      Hi Carol.

If the new cream you will be trying is called Mirvaso, you really should read more about it before use. It has caused severe rebound with some users, but may help many more. But it is too new to call safe yet. I wouldn't try it before we know more, unless you are very bad ridden. Go to the Rosacea Support Group and read David Pascoe's stuff about it. He has been a Rosacea sufferer for years, and does so much great research. Might be too much info sometimes, so browse and keep your focus.

I just got rid of my facial seb derm with 25% zinc pyrithione cream.  I applied it 2-3 times a day and after about 3 weeks to a month it is gone!  So happy!! It was miserable,  I had it around my nose down to my chin and around my eyes.  Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Heidi. The feedback on amazon on a 'Noble formula' seem very promising.

Just hope it could help Matt with his skin problem.. really.

I'll give it a try. Should be great to have ready to sweep off my regular and somewhat persistent outbreaks.

No problem,  I had it for 8 months and at one point it was cracking and bleeding around my nose.  I went to my doctor 3 times and was given antibiotics,  hydrocortisone,  and an antibiotic ointment.  None of it worked!  I also bought numerous creams at my health food store, I spent hundreds of dollars ( I am in the US)  :-). I tried eliminating dairy and wheat from my diet too.   I read about the zinc cream on another website so I got some from amazon.  It stings at first but that goes away.  It also works slowly, especially if it is a bad case. I hope it works for others too!  I realize that different things work for different people.  My skin looks fabulous and I felt I should share my experience.   Huge relief!!

Hello, Matt. I have the same problem so absolutely understand your feelings as walk your shoes. I've tried many things: peels, alternative medicine, stopped using cosmetics even (oh my gosh!!!) because it's not only visible vessels for me but really sensitive skin, as well. I quit smoking as my skin was reactive to it too! But despite of all that, rosacea didn't leave me. Until once I've decided to try one thing. It was a Myrtle Mask by Alodem which calms the skin, moisturizes it and the flush is gone for quite a long time just after the first treatment - it's true. I started to do facials with this cosmetics. It's an Israeli company Anna Lotan which is not that popular in the UK so far. Don't remember all the ingredients, of course but it really works well because of Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Green Tea. So, in addition to my facials I put wet compresses with those herbs on my face. Right now I only use this cosmetics for home care but there's no remission. Good luck!

    Hi, Matt

I was healed from rosacea in 3 weeks! About 3-4 years ago the symptoms of rosacea appeared on my nose. Number of dermatologists treated it with various creams and variety of internal oral drugs, including steroids and after a slight improvement the symptoms returned. I also  received laser treatments. The specialists’ could not promise prolonged or permanent cure. Then, in the spring of 2013 a side effects of light sensitivity has developed on the treated area.

Luckily, by the proposal of a dermatologist, I started using the Arquebuse Water 75 herbal essences. After about 3-4 weeks, and the use of a 100 ml of Arquebuse Water the inflammation and the rosacea completely gone from my nose. I know what you are going through and I really hope it will help you too !

      Hello, and thank you!

So it was the Arq. 75 flower water you used, and not the Arq. 75 flower essence? Have you tried them both?

I have the same issues with my nose, I've noticed lately that it doesn't seem related to what I eat but everything I eat. It doesn't matter what I eat but you can guarantee an hour or so after eating my nose is very red. It also feels tight and crusty on the inside of the nostrils. I do wonder if it is related to digestion at all?

Somebody also mentioned to me this week that mercury in tooth fillings can be a cause of skin problems. I had 4 fillings about 15 years ago which coincidentally is when my skin problems started.

I also wonder if this could be related.

    Good luck all.

Do research on facial demodex mite. I was recommended tea tree oil and soon after starting oil I had white threads which could be squeezed out. Tea tree oil kills the blighters stone dead. Hope this is useful to you, good luck mate

    Hello Matt,

Having had a similar problem for years I have tried numerous remedies, including prescription and homopathic. Doxycyclin tablits seemed to work the best as these reduced spots and reduced redness. However, the long term use of antibiotics is not what I want or increasingly neither do the medical profession. Also they were not always effetive at times

Having recently read about a new cream that can be applied daily that reduces the redness for up to 24hours, I decided to investigate further. The cream is Brimonidine tartrate. It is now listed under NHS choices and you can find more information there.

Having read about it further, I found it apparently causes the blood vessels in the area where it is applied to contrict and reduce ther flow of blood and so reduce the redness. It does nothing to reduce any spots/pustules, so it is used in conjunction with another trestment for that. For the last two weeks, I have been using Azealic acid twice a day (to eliminate the spots etc) and the  Brimonidine tartrate to reduce the redness. So far I have been very pleased with the progress.

The Brimonidine tartrate works like magic. The redness reduces dramatically after half an hour or so. The only problem I had at the start was that as the redness went, the spots became more visible as they were no longer lost in the redness. Hovever, the azelaic acid has started to work and things are improving all the time. Early days, but I am very optimistic that a reamidy has been found.

You can get the Brimonidine tartrate by private prescription, but I urge you to go to your doctor to make sure it is suitable for you and so is any other medication used in conjunction. My doctor was reluctant to prescribe the Brimonidine tartrate on grounds of cost to the NHS, but I explained that I had seen it on NHS choices and that as only a small area needed to be treated that a tibe would last a long time. I also explained the difficulties of living with rosacia. He finally conceded and gave the prescription. I think the Brimonidine tartrate will last for many months as I have found that I only use it on days when it is needed. Some days the azelaic acid is ok on it's own (when things are going well), and I don't use it if I am not going out. The very thought that I have a treatment that will reduce the redness on any day I need it is fantastic.

I hope this is helpful to you.

    Good luck.

Hi Peter, thank you very much for the reply. I've never heard of the briomidine but after reading your post I did a bit of research and have to say it looks very encouraging. I sent a mail to my dermatologist about it (who quite frankly I've given up on!) but will be interested in her response. I live in Ireland so will have to see if it's available. I live in hope that this is a magic cure for me as well! Keep me posted on your progress. Many thanks, Matt

      Hi Peter,

How is the Brimonidine working out for you? It looks like following an email request to m thy dermatologist she had agreed to give me a prescription so all being well I should be able to give it a try within the next week or so. Fingers crossed for a good result! Thanks again for the tip. Take care.

    Hello Matt,

I will be interested to know how you find the Brimonidine. I find it deffinately has a remarkable effect when applied. It does not result in perfection, but I have found that it is a great help and one of the best products available for reducing the redness.

The biggest problem is that it does nothing to reduce spots. I had started using Azelaic acid along with the Brimonidine, but found that this was not getting rid of the spots and was a bit irritating to use. I have switched to  Metronidazole gel and have found this a bit more effective.

So far, I have found that I can use the  the Brimonidine to reduce the redness effectively at times that are important to me. It is only once a day use, but I don't use it every day and sometime apply it later in the day depending on what I am doing or how much redness there is. The usual triggers still have an effect (alcohol, spicey foods etc) but the redness does not get too bad if the Brimonidine has been applied.

I have learnd over the years that there is no perfect fix for rosacia, but so far I feel I have found an important tool in controling my appearance. The fact that it can be used with alternative additional treatments also makes me believe that I can take control of the condition.

I hope you find that the treatment works for you too.

    Peter
