Sciatica pain down leg what's quickest way to get rid of paid

25yr old male, had lower back pain for over a year. Spend more time off work that at work due to my occupation being physically strenuous. Woke up in the morning with the pain travelling down my leg which is stopping me doing what I enjoy, gym etc. I've now had to quit my job n take a less strenuous one which pays around 30% of my previous wage. Anyone have an idea on how to fix it. I just get told to do useless stretches which have no affect at all.

Hi just a quick reply I take it that a physio has given you stretches to do have you pushed your Dr for an MRI to find out if it is a bulging disc it took over 2yrs to get an MRI that isn't totally the answer but for me I had to understand what was happening. To date I have been on numerous pain meds that just make me sleepy had chiropractic assessment and adjustment with minimal effect. Recently on an acute flair up I went to an osteopath who performed acupuncture and that did give some instant relief the shame is I have been too lethargic from pain meds and have been sleeping alot so I haven't been practising sciatic relief poses to get stronger. utube numerous exercises you can do. I do believe you have to be consistent in doing these every day and not stressing your weak spot . I stupidly went trampolining with my 10yr old nothing too energetic but has been enough to put me out of action for a month before that I was doing yoga pilates aerobics and was generally fit. Now I need to get in a place back where I strengthen my core to help support my back I have a slight bulge L4/L5 had an injection last May that I had when I was relatively well so I didn't notice much difference. I have read numerous books and articles that have helped me when I have been at my lowest. The thing is to keep going as you are a lot younger than me and probably fitter but you need to get your core strong enough to deal with getting back to the gym. There are alot of options out there it's finding what works .Anyway I hope that helps a bit .

      Hi,

I can tell you from experience (L5/SI discectomy and large disc fragment removal) that the pain meds are a waste of time. Pain meds will dope you and make you tired but will do nothing to relive the pain of the nerve. The nerve is being impinged in one way or another. Be it a bulge that is pressing on it or a piece of disc broken off which is crushing it. You need to look into Gabbapentin. It works in the brain to turn off the nerve pain. It was a God send for me and allowed me to function while I waited for surgery.

The key w/ Gabba is to start small and work your way up since the major side effect is tiredness. Start 100mg 3 times a day and work up from there until pain is relieved. I found the sweet spot at 300mg 3 times a day where the pain was drastically reduced and I wasn't tired. While 900mg may sound like a lot a nurse confirmed that 1200mg is normal and see people go way beyone that.

      Hope this helps.

Hi Ryan I'm sorry to hear about your suffering from the dreaded sciatica, as a result of lower back pain! I also have had long term back pain owing to disc regeneration. It may be worth you requesting a referral to a pain specialist who may well have the right decision for you mate! I just hope you don't reside in Shropshire as fundings have been cut for back procedures

Suffered from intense sciatica from time to time while in my hockey years.  Chiropractor..."pretzel twist"...get up and walk out pain-free.

About 5 years ago, I had another intense bout of it.  Pain shots, PT, chiropractor, meds...no joy.  MRI showed something suspicious but inconclusive.  My neurosurgeon went in and found a bone spur literally "crushing" (doc's word) my sciatic nerve root at L4.  Filed it off, closed me up...zero pain.

Now the pain is back in BOTH legs.  Foraminal stenosis...surgery next month.  I'd see a neurosurgeon...
