Should i insist on Colonoscopy?

Hi everyone,

I'm extremely worried that my doctor may have misdiagnised some serious symptoms as due to Anal Fissure (But i dont have any pain during bowel movement.)

I'll get straight to my symptoms:

1) for the past one month frequent changes in bowel movement i.e. on and off diahrea.

2) Stomach discomfort. Also i had very mild pain all over stomach once or twice in the last month.

3) Blood in stool the past two days.

Initially i thought the stomach problems were maybe related to some food that i ate, however as soon as i saw blood in stool i visited a Gastroenterologist.

As per his direction i got a sigmoidoscopy done(around 30cm). But the results only found that everything was normal except that i had Anal Fissure. My Gastro accordingly prescribed some fibre suppliment for my irregular bowel movement as well as medications for fissure.

However it was only after ariving home and googling that i found that Anal Fissure is always accompanied by pain during or after bowel movement, which i have never had. Also the medications he prescribed me is mainly to relieve anal area pain from fissure which i dont have.rolleyes

So now i am worried that the Gastro Doctor may have got his diagnosis wrong. He did say that if the problems persisted i may get a colonscopy after 2 months! Should i wait? If it is Colon Cancer does the 2 months make a difference?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, I just went through panic moments with symtpms. Must say I overgoogled it. After check found two polyps which were remove, now waiting for lab tests (should be okey). I went to private medical center, it costed me about 280€ in Germany (called on friday, appointment on Tuesday morning). Sometimes waitign and googling is worse than the symtoms. If you are extremely worried and find your self in bed in the evening with your mobile and googleing about cancer, then just get it done for your piece of mind.

    Hope it helps, good luck!

Hey thank you so much for your reply.

Yeah, thats pretty much what i've been doing since seeing blood in my stool. Googling a lot and freaking myself out with each article that i read.  Maybe i should just get it done immediately from a separate place.

Glad yours just turned out to be polyps. smile

With medical symptoms, I'm afraid Google is most definitely NOT your friend! No matter what you put in, you can bet your bottom dollar that one of the results it will come up with is cancer. re the 2 month wait- it's nothing in the scheme of things. Between my diagnosis and surgery was almost 18 months, so don't worry on that score.

Do you not have a GP you could see?  Have you spoken to the gastroenterologist about what you have said here? If not, that woulld be my next move. That and seeing my GP.

      Hey,

Yeah, i really should stop googling when it comes to diseases.

Its just every one of my symptoms lead me to conclude that i have colon cancer.

18 months seems like a loong time to take action, i cant believe they put you through that. Hope your doing well after the surgery.

And here i am thinking even a 2 months wait is too much.

Though glad to hear that the doctors were willing to wait even 18 months for you. I guess i was under the wrong impression that if i do have colon cancer, then within 2 months it could progress from stage 2 or 3 to stage 4 and metastasise to my liver or something. Phew. Thats a big relief, maybe i should just forget about this now and focus on my exams coming up and just get the colonoscopy after 2 months as the Doctor suggested.

I do have a regular GP that i usually see, but this time i went directly to the GI specialist because i kind of freaked out after over googling about my symptoms.

I did expressly tell my Gastroenterologist that i dont have any pain during bowel movement, but after the sigmoidoscopy he still seemed to think that the blood was from anal fissures. I guess for now i'll trust his diagnosis and wait till my exams get over and go consult him again after two months and get the colonoscopy done.

Thank you so much for you reply, you've been really helpful. Thanks a lot. God bless you!
