Sick and tired of feeling sick and tired...

I've just finished week 1 on lansoprazole after trying 5weeks of omeprazole with no change. I thought I'd noticed a little improvement but yesterday and today I seem to have gone downhill again. I know its early days especially as my symptoms are more like LPR which don't always react so well to PPI's (if at all) but what's really getting me down is how tired I feel all the time. I'm having some blood tests tomorrow, mainly to check for iron deficiency but this tiredness started with my reflux symptoms, before the PPI's, so I cant blame it on that. If I did have a deficiency it would be a big coincidence for it to have started with the reflux so I'm not holding up much hope. I've had a sore throat now for months so I'm not sure if my body is just wiped out having to deal with constantly trying to repair my throat or if this is triggered by the anxiety this is giving me. I seem to sleep ok (no insomnia etc) but I'm at my wits end for what to do. Does anyone else with LPR get the tiredness? If this is a fairly normal symptom at least it might ease my worry!

I know what you mean. Part of me is wondering if my tiredness is actually from anxiety/depression from feeling like this all the time. Its completely taking over my day and I cant ignore it because its always there! Have you had any tests done yet for an official diagnosis? Mines just going off my symptoms at the moment but if these new meds don't work after 4weeks they said they'd refer me to an ENT but god knows how long that will take to get an appointment. One thing I have noticed helps is difflam oral rinse. I've been using it for a few days and the soreness in my throat has eased off (although the hoarseness and coughing hasn't). I think where it was burning my throat it was leaving me open to any bacteria going around so I was actually getting a baterial/virus sore throat not just pain from the acid irritation. Its worth a try, I got some from my local pharmacy.

Hi sorry your still feeling so rough, I am very much the same having a constant sore throat gives us the tiredness. That's without the feeling sick and pain in chest nose ears eyes etc. I am sure it's LPR as PPI's are no use at all even gaviscon doesn't work now. I'm off to see another specialist on Friday so we will see where I go from here. So many of us with the same thing. Take care

Its so frustrating. My doctor didn't seem to believe me when I said about the tiredness but as this has gradually been getting worse I feel more tired. When I have a good day I seem to be less tired. I think mine is LPR too. I get very little burning chest and even when I do I wouldn't say its strong enough to call it heartburn. All my symptoms are in my throat, ears etc. Its driving me mad! Xx

Hi I have very similar symptoms. Tiredness. Sore eyes. Sore nasal passages and ear with persistent cough. I also take lansoprazole which doesn't seem to make much difference. Have had it for around 1 year now. Being told could be intolerance to something maybe food related. Have tried no wheat or very little. Then no dairy. No peppers or spicy foods. Driving me nuts. Can emphasise with you on the tiredness and anxiety. I have a nasal spray and also asthma inhaler. Grr. X

Sorry you have to go through the same. I really hope you find some relief soon. Funny you should say about the sore eyes. I noticed this too but couldn't find anything online to explain it. I used to wear contacts but my eyes feel so gritty and sore all the tine I can hardly wear them. I also get the full ear feeling too. Xx

Give it at least 4 wks to work and it could be longer if dose needs to be increased

Hi, I did try 5 weeks on 20mg a day omeprazole but when I had my follow up at the end of week 5 they switched me to 2 x 15mg lansoprazole a day. I'm now 1 1/2 weeks into that so we'll see!

Curious about the blood tests- what did they reveal? You are taking drugs for acid reflux...but you don't mention it here.... perhaps something I wrote can help? https://patient.info/forums/discuss/acid-reflux-hiatal-hernia-and-heart-palpitations-531748

Well I was tested for iron anaemia, glandular fever, my thyroid levels (I think) a full blood count. I rang to get the results and they said it looks normal but the doctor would contact me if they want to talk about anything but i haven't heard from them. I know that should be good but I was almost hoping for something easy to fix! I have been taking a load of supplements since just before the test (vit c and zinc, b12, magnesium etc) and it might be a coincidence but I am feeling less tired these last few days. There's no improvement on the hoarseness or burning chest unfortunately so if it doesn't improve any more in the last 2weeks of my meds I'll see the GP and hopefully get a referral to an ENT. So far I've tried 5 weeks of 20mg omeprazole a day and now I've done 2weeks of 15mg x 2 of lansoprazole a day (2more weeks left) but neither has worked. I am trying a lot of the things you recommend in you post but unfortunately those sort of things don't seem to be helping yet. Maybe I just need to give it a bit more time. X

Sounds like you are on the right track. Myself, I have lost 20 lbs. and it has helped by GERD. In order to stop the burning in my chest and throat, I use Pepsid AC before meals. Everything I am doing is helping. Good luck.

What is LPR?  Sounds like you need to get to the Primary Care doctor and check for inflamation and infection and try to get to the bottom of your problems. The body has a way of telling us when something is wrong. I know the frustration of seeing the doctor over and over....but an upper GI will certainly answer some questions. They need to get a scope down there to see what's causing the problem it sounds like. Someone posted recently that there was a cyst or something getting infected in the throat and it was removed helping experience a happier life.

Yeah i'm hoping as soon as I have my appointment in 2 weeks they'll refer refer me so I can get real answers. LPR is another type of reflux where it typically comes up higher and affects the voicebox etc. I think (although I'm just learning about it) that it can be less.to do with having too much acid and more to do with the fact anything is coming up because the higher up part like your larynx is a lot more fragile. That's why PPI's don't often help. Even when the acid is reduced it still doesn't stop the liquid refluxing so the irritation continues. Fingers crossed I find something that helps soon. Xx
