side effects of prednisone

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am 18 years old and have been put on prednisone three times in the past three months and I also received a shot of it when I had an allergic  reaction back in August. Thedoctor  keeps prescribing prednisone for infected tonsils however it seems my side effects get worse every time. I tapered off my last dose last sunday however I am still experiencing headaches, strange thoughts, mood swings, and slight depression. I have asked the doctor and he said its normal however I am starting to worry is this normal

They are normal in the context of side effects Hailey but they are things you need to keep an eye on. Some side effects of pred do mount up as your total dose increases.

I have to say - I do wonder why he's repeatedly using pred for infected tonsils so I'd suggest you ask another doctor for a second opinion and maybe you need to see an ENT specialist (ear, nose and throat). It's a question I'd be asking if you were my daughter.

iNFECTED TONSILS? He gave you prednisone,SORRY,but, antibiotics can help with that,I would think.I have been on prednisone over15 years, been in hospital 75 times,I have severe asthma. Its a GREAT drug, but, now I'm trying to stay off-n-OMGOSCH,I hurt SO bad,ny legs don't want to get up-n-go,they keep throbbing!! Thats all the Drs seem to put me on right away. The weight gain is hard for me to lose.I'm working full time, but, the minute I sit down is very hard for me to get up-n-walk.I'm trying SO hard to walk it off, but, not happening.Side effects are BAD!!! I know alot of drugs are, but, this one STINKS! Great for asthma attacks to control but,its taking ALOT more doses now to get me out of the attacks Good luck!

Hi Hailey, I've been on Prednisone for going on 4 years for two different conditions.  Had the awful moonface on higher doses. Tapering off is really very difficult.  I'm down to 2mg for the 2nd time after having to go back up and come down again which I had to do on other doses on my way down to 2mg.  I think the things you are experiencing are common; I'm having some of them too,  But if they don't lessen or go away, I'd talk to your doctor again.  As for the Dr. prescribing Prednisone for infected tonsils, I don't find that odd.  Drs. are using Prednisone for lots of conditions that used to be treated with antibiotics due, presumably, to the fact that overuse of antibiotics builds up a resistance.

Hi Hailey .... I'm wondering about giving you Prednisone for infected tonsils .... maybe it's just where you live, or your doctor's preferred treatment, but whenever I've had infected tonsils - or my kids - we all just took an antibiotic - usually Amoxicillin.   We called the disease strep throat.    Look up strep throat and see if it sounds like what you get.

    Take care, Barb
