Small trace of blood in urine

Hello. Last week I had a sudden severe pain in the lower middle abdomen (right above my vagina bone). I went to see my GP the next day and he did a urinalysis from a dipstick and told me the test was normal EXCEPT it stated that there was a little blood in my urine ( "trace intact"). I also did a urine culture and bloodwork and everything was normal. He then prescribed me with bactrim for UTI. After two doses, immediately the pain subsided. HOWEVER, the next day I started getting urinary incontenence and retention. But I continued the antibiotics. So then yesterday I went to see my Obgyne..and did another urinalysis. And it STILL states small amounts of blood in my urine. It was done through a dipstick as well. He wasn't concerned. He just told me to do a pelvic exam and come back in two weeks.

I am 37 year old female and a smoker. How accurate are the dipstick tests? I heard that in a urinalysis, anything under 3+ is normal for blood in urine. I also heard that I should get my urine examined under a microscope to see exactly how much blood is in my urine.

What could cause the urinary incontenence and retention if I have no pain and no other symptoms? Could it maybe be kidney stones? But I don't have any pain or anything.

I've never had a UTI or blood in my urine in my life so I am quite concerned.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi,ive had trace amount before with a regular urinalisis and doctor wasnt concerened that was 4 years ago. My test this past november no trace. I wasnt having pain though,it was routine. I think id ask more about the kidney stones.

Wouldn't kidney stones have pain? Specially in my back? My first pain was lower abdomen. So it's kind of odd. Are you smoker also? I heard smoking can cause trace of blood in urine as well.

Intersticial cystitus can cause frequency retention, though pain usual with it, can also show traces of blood in urine with no bacteria present, although recent research has shown it can respond well to anti bs.  There could be other reasons, but its worth checking out, more info advice forum  on c.o.b site, who specialise in i.c and other probs. Only diagnosed by cystascope, good luck
