Swollen collarbone left side

Hello all,

I wonder if you could help me because I am slightly freaking out.

So I have been suffering from tight upper back and trapezius, and I have been having regularly deep tissue massages.

Almost a month ago, I decided to try acupuncture but it didn’t really do anything for me.

After the appointment I was self-massaging myself, and as I was trying to find possible trigger points, and I ended up going hard on the area above my collarbone.

Ever since that day, I noticed a swelling along the collarbone on the left side, around the middle of the bone towards the shoulder joint. So not a round lump but more like a lump across the top of the collarbone.

Recently I have noticed that my left trapezius is swollen as well compared to my right side and 2 days ago I noticed that I have a small discomfort on the left of my throat, when I swallow and finally I want to add that my left hand is a tiny bit tingly/numb some times.

I went to my GP a week after I did the self-massaging, and she said that she couldn’t see something medically urgent, and that I may have injured myself and possibly made a lymph node swollen.

Any ideas?

Thank you so much in advance.

Just to add finally, that i am spending many hours in front of a computer, both at work and at home. I thought that my posture was bad and i installed a desk extender ( for my left hand ) which i believe may have made the tension worse, as it is not very solid and maybe without noticing i was keeping my left elbow raised.

Hi! I don't mean to scare you but if it truly is a lymph node thats swollen and not a muscle then I recommend getting a second opinion. I've always read that a swollen lymph node around the collar bone is abnormal and needs to be evaluated. They should be able to send you for an ultrasound of the area and see what's going on.

To me it sounds more like a pulled muscle and possibly pinched nerve but I'm no expert. If it persists I'd definitely go back.

      Thank you for replying.

I have considered the pinched nerved, because all the symptoms started after the accupuncture and after me going hard in that area.

I have another appointement with my GP on Wednesday and im going to request an ultrasound/xray check up to clear things out.

Will update the thread with my findings.

Did you ever find out what it was? I have the exact thing now for 3 weeks. Had elevated white blood cells and been on large dose antibiotics but the clavicle swelling is returning and getting hot again. A bit worried here. Thanks.

      Hi all,

      Apologies for the late reply.

I am still experiencing similar symptoms, but without them becoming worse.

The swelling on the collarbone is still there

The muscle on my left trapezious is still tense

My throat discomfort is still there, but far less.

However I went to have a Ultrasound on the collarbone, and came out clean.

From my investigation i came to understand that this may be related to Scapular Winging .

I am planning on seeing some sort of specialist to work on that, like osteopath, because even when i am lifting weights in the gym, i can see that my left arm is weaker and sometimes tingling.

Regarding the throat discomfort, i believe that it is linked with stress and dry throat.

By checking my throat , i did manage to find that my throat muscles on the left are a lot more tense and potentially an oversized lymph which has made me freaked out for a long time, but again i had blood tests for thyroid, checked by ENT twice and ultrasound on the area and everything came out clean.

So i think that everything is linked together and my left side is a mess.

I would advise checking with the ENT and have some ultrasound, to put you at ease.

Sorry for not replying earlier - the emails were going to the trash folder.

      Any issues, ask.

This is another post i made about my symptoms in another website, slightly updated to include the discomfort at the throat:

"Like the most of you I am experiencing throat tightness in the base of my throat just on the top of the thorax when the two neck muscles meet.

I have been having this feeling for almost a year now .

The tightness did go away for a few months ( spring-summer) and it usually manifests when it’s cold.

When that tightness was at its lowest , I did have another small feeling next to my throat that felt like a bit of food was stuck .

I had blood tests for thyroid - came clean , ENT checked my neck and looked inside - clean , I had an ultrasound - clean .

The above do seems to point that the tightness is psychological and possibly stress , but like many of you the irritation is real and been going in for long.

It was interesting to read a persons response mentioning the neck muscles .

Before this tightness appearing , I was having a very weird soreness above my left clavicle - sort of a swelling across the bone till my shoulder . That caused to feel my left arm a bit funny as if that swelling was messing up the muscle/nerves.

I had an ultrasound on that and it came clean. I suspect that has to do with round shoulders syndrome and muscle scar tissue between shoulder and back wing .

So I am a bit lost now as the doctors can’t seem to help me with my inconvenience .

I am currently awaiting some results from the Endocrinologist but I am not sure what are the next steps to take .

Ct scan? Barium swallow ? These would remove the chance of something malicious I guess , and then maybe talk to a surgeon orthopaedist to investigate the possibility of my shoulder-clavicle-throat being all stuck together . "
