symbicort

So, my daughters asthma has worsened over the past couple of months. Her nurse tried increasing her steroid inhaler dose with limited success. She added montelukast 10 days ago and its def helping. She is however still coughing too much so the nurse decided today to take her off seretide and try symbicort. Am just wondering out of curiousityif anyone has found it to be more helpful that seretide?

Hi Amanda, I'm now on symbicort turbuhaler 2x mornings and again at bedtime plus up to 4 more inhales if it is cold or I need to go out in the wind. I've tried many types of inhalers over the years but my specialist put me on Symbicort 18 months ago and I'm now copy far better and hardly any chest infections. I haven't had to on steroids per say but I believe that Symbicort may have a steroid in it, but please ask your Dr or pharmacy about this to be absolutely sure. The only trouble I have are mouth ulcers if I don't rince after using my inhaler. Otherwise l find Symbicort very good. Best of luck with your daughter and do keep us posted on any updates 😷Mike

Mike, I didnt see wht dosage of Symbicort you are using? This inhaler is Formoterol (beta agonist) and Butesonide, a steroid. After a few years use (nowhere near as much as you use) I now have very thin skin and weak veins as a side effect- that you will certainly have soon so take care.

I'm on Symbicort 200/6 dose, 160 doses per Terbuhaler.

I'm prescribed 2x mornings and 2x evenings or bedtimes plus 1 or 2 extra doses 2x daily when required but I only take extra doses of needed, more so over wintery/cold damp nights or before I need to go outdoors in a cold wind. I know when I need an extra dose as I always start to continuesly cough, especially when out in a cold wind or if I wake up coughing on a cold frosty night..

We had a bad experience with my teenage son using Symbicort throughout the day as a relief inhaler. The company promotes this as the Symbicort "SMART" protocol. Unfortunately each puff means absorbing more steroids. His immune system weakened, he began having constant colds and then a terrible bout of influenza that affected his lungs for months. So it may be valuable on the regular dosage but you should weigh the benefits carefully of using it frequently instead of a regular bronchodilator. Other things to consider -- are any foods acting as triggers? Any mold sources in the home, or high levels of dust mites? Any pets? A HEPA air cleaner in the bedroom can be helpful.

We stopped Symbicort and use Alvesco (ciclesonide) instead - it is said to be less absorbed into the body (i.e. acts mainly in the lungs). Regularly taking a vitamin D supplement has also been shown to reduce asthma (recent study), and magnesium supplements are muscle relaxants for the lungs (effect is mild but if you have a deficiency, could be quite helpful.)

    Hi

I have recently been commenced on Symbicort whilst remaining on Salbutamol.  I find the counter confusing - on my previous medication Seretide the counter is clear and you actually confirm that you have received a dose - with Sybicort this does not appear to be the case and this morning I have clearly overdosed and in addition to my regular coffee yocu can imagine the effect.  It seems on my inhaler that I have 120 and then 100 with nothing in between.  Add this to the fact that it has very little taste compared to the Seretide accuhaler ....   Has anyone had a similar experience?

Lydia - put your inhaler ON the cupboard overnightm after your morning dose put it IN the cupboard , stop being so picky about the numbers, when the red bit comes go get a new one.
