Treatment for Achilles tendonitis?

Posted , 4 users are following.

For a number of years, my left Achilles tendon has been a little tender.  Now it is very sore and aches, even at rest, with a burning feeling.  I also have a painful lump half-way up the tendon.  I saw the GP, who has sent me for a scan, which I will be having next week.

I just wondered what will happen next?  Is the only treatment likely to be physiotherapy?

I'm a little concerned, as I have mid-foot arthritis in my right foot, which is causing me a lot of problems and I may have to have surgery on that next year.

Just wanted to add - so annoying that we can't edit these posts - that I haven't had an injury, but believe that the problem is age-related.  I will be 70 next birthday.

Concerning the last paragraph, I found out I had arthritis in my right foot after an MRI.  The specialist put me out for the procedure of manipulation and injections of the foot.  It DOES feel better, but nothing really cures arthritis in the end.

I imagine after your scan results, the GP will either recommend physiotherapy or possibly refer you to a specialist who will undoubtedly find the best solution for the achilles tendon - especially the painful lump which should be seen to asap..

Thank you Louise.  Sorry to hear that you've got arthritis in your foot as well.  I have had a steroid injection into that foot - using ultrasound - and the consultant told me that the joint was bone on bone.  Unfortunately, the injection did absolutely nothing.  I will be trying orthoses next, but am not too optimistic about it.  I know the next step is surgery.

Off to get the Achilles tendon scanned next week.  I was also diagnosed with hip bursitis two years ago and I think I may also have it in my shoulders.  Don't know if the tendonitis and the bursitis are connected in any way, but it certainly makes life interesting!

I hope everything works out Rosie for you and can truly sympathize with all you're going through.

I will not get any more injections for the foot because I hear too many collapses the ligaments.  Walking DOES help arthritis especially with a good pair of thick soled walking shoes.  Ah, the pains of life!

Hope is around the corner, and physio is not the only choice you have..but it is the first line of treatment, along with ultrasound and steroid injections...although you can have surgery if all that fails to help..I had surgery in August and am still recovering, it's a big operation with a minimum recovery time of 12/16 weeks you still also have to do physio afterwards... If you want to know anything else feel free to ask. X

So I went for the scan today.  The person who did it said she couldn't really find anything at first.  So, I was just beginning to feel like a complete fraud, when she thought  that the area where the lump was looked like old tears, and the tissue had tried to heal itself.  There was also another tear, in a different area, where the same thing appeared to have happened.  Does this make sense?

Anyway, she said that she would have to think about what to put into the report for the GP and I'll be going back to see him in a couple of weeks.

It certainly means there is some damage to the Achelies tendon by the sounds of it, by writing to your GP I'm guessing that it looks like physio is a possibility to start with.. I know they hate to do surgery unless it's the final option. X
