Very confused about Surgery

This may sound weird, but when I went into my Pre-Op the doctor asked if I had any question, we talked about pain management, she told me there are not allot of nerves down there and not to worry, not painful... That was the all she said to me, nothing about what she was going to do, or dangers nothing, she said "im in a hurry I have a baby to  deliver" I took to youtube and watched a few video's. All the surgery seemed to be on the inside. But really what do I know? I trusted the doctor White Coat. I wen't to surgery. I really had NO idea what was going to happen to me.

When I woke up oh  boy the that pain I was not supposed feel hit me hard.. I did not know that she had to do an episiotomy in order to preform the surgery. When I asked she said this was standerd way. If she had told me this before, If I would have known before surgery I would have not had it done.. I even asked her explain what she did and she said "The standard" Well WTF is that.. she still would not explain the procedure to me.I asked again please tell me what you did to me. She said "i didn't do anything out of the ordinary" I still have know idea what she did. What should I do, I will never see that doctor again...

I had surgery march 6th of this year. My doctor explained the basics of the surgery, and was open to answer any questions. She assured me that all would be well after, but not that its been 9 months, not all of my problems are fixed, but the main ones are. I would definitely recommend icing a lot. It got me through the pain because the pain killers I was given made me feel funny and kept me wide awake. I definitely understand not wanting the episiotomy, I had it as well (I am in Indiana). I had one with the birth of my child 5 years prior and it wasn't done all too well, and my surgery corrected it a little. I had a bladder and rectal prolapse. That was fixed, and I also had a labia reduction which is nice, but it isn't tightened as much as I'd hoped at all, and I don't have any more sensation than I did before.

sorry to hear this. I had pretty much the same and it wasn't really explained to me what had been done. .. she was far too busy for that

. . plus I had no support structure or aftercare in what can only be described as the worst 6 weeks of my life following complications after surgery.

I think it is pretty disgraceful if the truth be known. this is not minor surgery for any if us... some ladies are lucky to sail through without too many problems alas sadly I was not one of them. if things had been explained to me properly or I had been told of the possible complications I am not sure I would have gone through with this surgery which is invasive and has been terribly painful both physically and emotionally for me.

I feel the same as you and will be looking to transfer my care if I require assistance going forward. I haven't even been examined since my surgery.. specialist far too busy with bigger better thinns. I am still stunned at what has occurred. ..

if I can help in any way please let me know.

matron on this site is wonderful having worked in this sector for many years and she has provided more support to me as have other ladies than the people I have paid to provide care to me.

thus site has been absolutely invaluable to me and it is so important we report our experiences here so that other women are aware and care address with their doctors ahead of their surgeries to avoid being in the same position as us

wishing you happy holidays and hope 2016 brings something better all round xx

Oh my, I am sorry you have been through so much. After my son, I lost a lot of feeling and sensation. I felt a lot of pain the week of surgery, but I iced until I went numb and that was about all I could do. I am in my twenties and never imagined so much damage being done in the birth of one child. I wish daily that they had listened and just did a cesarean so I could live a normal life. I don't recall any twenty something year olds ever worrying about whether or not their bladder or rectum are in place, and quite frankly, I think I could have given birth alone better than it went down at the hospital. As a doctor, I think it's just assumed by your patients that you have their best interest. It is upsetting that it hasn't been quite that way for many of us. I've been told that the only way for me to be "normal" again, is to have a very expensive surgery that insurance won't cover, but I have to be done having children first. Yay me. I don't even have faith at this point that it would completely work. How long ago was your surgery?

Chey, I don't know where you are. I'm in the USA and had my 1st child at 16. I had to have major repair surgery after I was finally able to tell my aunt. Fortunately, even that far back it was covered by insurance here. I went on to have 2 more children and never had that problem again. Good luck to you.

That is awful!! It's your body and she's the professional and you definitely should of been explained the whole procedure of what was wrong, what they were going to do and also the post-op what to expect. Whoever your doctor they seemed very insensitive to you. When did they say they would be doing a follow up? Hope you can get some answers soon , until then make sure you rest a lot, no heavy lifting that includes the house work and make sure your bowels move without straining by using stool softener. I used murilax and still use stool softener and I'm 9 weeks post op now. I am almost back to my normal self and still bring cautious and taking it easy.

    Keep in touch!!

Did you get pain meds yet? If not use ibuprofen it'll help with the pain and swelling. Pain meds I used for the first week or so then winged off cause they cause constipation, plus I didn't want to start relying on them.

Andrea I had my op for bowel and bladder 7 weeks ago now wasn't told a lot before he did tell me basics like I would have stitches from back to front no lifting stretching up no straining by any means just to relax as much as possible and take lactolose or ducolax to help me to go as it takes time to start the cycle going again after the surgery my stitches have started to come out now where they come from it tingles slightly but not bad pain, keep taking pain killers and soaks in the bath they do help for at least 6 weeks take it easy no sex for a further couple of weeks or though the thought of that puts the fear of God in me I live in England and we don't get aftercare from gyne unit my practice nurse took a look after 6 weeks and made me feel a whole lot better I have had discharge from infections and thrush constantly after my op but feeling a lot better now persevere as it does get better I promise and the problems I was having before are certainly a ton loads better hope this helps and good luck a hope you have a happy new year honey

I think you should see your own doctor at your local surgery. Are you in the US? Things are a bit different here in the UK so not sure what else to say. Try sending a message to Matron on this forum as she has experience of being a patient and gyny nurse. Take a look through some of the older posts on this forum to find her. Best wishes, Ellie UK

PS, it's still Xmas holidays here so be a patient patient!

My doctor did not tell me anything, So after some layman research. I thought a cyctocele repair, with a couple inside stitches, was the same as a rectocele surgery... When I woke up and thought what the heck why did she do episiotomy, I had NO idea. Episoitomy that's almost funny.sad Im stitched from back to front all along the inside. Your probably thinking yep that's what they do for a rectocele.   I would have never had the surgery if I would have known.. I'm still trying to except what I still dont fully understand.. Whe I came home I thought again no big deal, I have done way to much without even knowing what could happen. I can go to the Hospital anytime. I will never see the bucher doctor again...cry
