Weakness in legs, painful knee, swollen&numbness in feet.

Hi everyone, I am in my mid 50'S hoping someone has some idea what is going on with me.

Almost been 5 months ago I had sprained my knee, had X Ray's & Mri's done showing nothing much but a sprain, then I had x rays & mri's on lower back the find was 3 disc bulges pinched nerves.

I must use a walker always do to the issues I am having with my knee which has not healed getting painful jabbing, twisting & grabbing feelings when I try to walk at any given time, I have weakness/nervouseness in legs which I have hard time standing up too long being legs will get very tired & with the knee problem my leg tightens up which pulls on the knee, my feet swell up causing numbness in couple smaller toes top & bottom on both feet, behind my head feels tight with pressure which is causing some light blureness in one eye.

I am in the dark on all this running to different doctors & seems no one has the answers to any of this.. I have to baby every step I take cause of the knee wanting to just get hit at any step I take, the feet swell making things even more difficult... being have no strength in upper legs that if I let go of my walker I literally feel like my legs are going to break in half & fall to the ground..

I am not sure what next step I am needing to do, I was going to go to a Chiropractor but I been told I shouldn't being it can make things much worse.. I had one place tell me to go through with an EMG test but I declined being many people have had bad lasting effects from going through that type of testing, running electric current through my nerves is nothing more I need added to my problems..life has been a total turn around for me now not living a normal life & has been very stressful just to even take a shower & going to the store... trying to go places just to have fun anymore doesn't really happen anymore with all this being very debilitating to me... it has changed my life completly only hoping & praying for answers & or a miracle from God to get me back to being normal.... any one else ever experienced this kind of thing please let me know what this may be. thank you..

I suspect buldging discs are the source of most of your pain and weakness. Been there and it can be debilitating.

Depending on what is causing your pain, there are various treatment options. Consult a spine specialist, such as an orthopedic spine surgeon Treatment options for conditions such as degenerative disc disease herniated discs may include medications, physical therapy, manipulation (e.g. by a chiropractor), injections, and occasionally, surgery or other invasive procedures.

important to manage your pain the best way possible. Even a rheumatologist can help with DEMARDS or biological meds. Try to do a little research and ask the docs what is the best solution to start with heeling.

The body wants to heel. Even message helps. It all adds up the buldging/herniated disc pressing on the nerves in the back is excruciating. This could be repaired first and that I'm sure will give you your life back. It did me a simple injection turned my life around.

Look ok into the many alternatives and find which is best for you!

Very true once the herniated discs are repaired your legs will get strength and a whole new life will open up for you. The nerves the discs are pressing on in the back can cause perminate damage, do don't wait tooo long.

Hi, E1960...wanting to clarify some information. You say you had an MRI and it showed nothing but a sprain. I think it is important to clarify the difference between a strain vs sprain. You say sprain...sprain is not "nothing" as you mention. This is injury to ligament which makes joint very unstable. A strain and mild sprains can not be visualized imaging. The fact that you say MRI showed sprain (or did you mean strain) and no further treatment was prescribed means the injury was probably mild and most likely was diagnosed based on a educated guess by your physician & not true visualization of injury. Second, the MRI of your back showing 3 bulging disc with pinched nerves. Imaging can not see pinched nerves unless them nerves are being compressed at the spinal column. If that was the case, this requires treatment. Physicians do not see that you are compressing nerves out of your spinal column and send you home with no treatment/surgical plan. If "pinched nerve" was mentioned I would get clarification as to did they really see nerve compression or was this another educated guess based on symptoms. If there is no compression....you need physical therapy..it is simply possible this is muscle/instability issue at the lumbo pelvic junction/hip complex causing compensation patterns that can increase pain and create injuries. Just for the record....many people have bulging disc and they do not have pain unless the disc is herniated or is causing compression issue. What I am saying is do not resort to seeing a surgeon until you have clarified your problem & if warranted tried some lesser invasive measures that may prove very effective for you...Best Wishes!
