What does it really work against IBS?

Hi All,

I am suffering from IBS for about a couple of years now. Recently this is getting worse and making my life complicating. Sometimes I have IBS attacks so suddendly and unexpectly that I have to leave work because I can't stay in the office any longer. The only thing that makes me feel better is laying down. When the pain arrives I can't sit or stand up either. Sometimes I feel like I am going to faint.

Just been to the GP and what he did (WITH NO SURPRISE) was just prescibe me some antispasmotidcs called Mebeverine and even if I tried to insist I want to go and see a specialist he did not do anything. He just said it's not worth it!! SO what shall I do? take tablets for all the rest of my life? Make up a diet on my own? Leave work, friends every time I have one of this painful attack that take my breath away?

I am really really upset and hopeless.

I can't handle this anymore. I am always bloated, look like I am pregnant  and feel tired with no energy. When I got one of this attack I just want to go to bed and the pain usually alleviates a bit. But this is affecting my social life and if I think I am only 26 and this can last a life time, how can i cope with it?

If anyone of you there reading this message has found a most effective solution to tablets and diet I would be happy to know.

I heard acupuncture may help? Anyone experiencing that?

I would not be afraid of anything and ready to do a colonscopy right now if this could help but as my \"dear\" GP said is not worth it. SO question is: WHAT DOES IT REALLY WORK AGAINST IBS? what is worth doing?

Thank you so much for reading my message and I am closed to everyone who like me is suffering from IBS.

Mary

Hi there so sorry to hear you are unwell, i have been suffering for too long, i was taking mebeverine, after a bad attack six weeks ago my gp changed me to spasmonal forte( alverine citrate) which fingers crossed have eased my pain, still needing the loo , but can cope with that. I have started to eliminate bread, mushroom tomato onion, could never eat cheese ,but ok with dairy(i think) had york test but found too expensive to carry on , going to alternate practisioner 29 th (will let you know) i also been reading Gillian McKeith you are what you eat, this makes sense , she describes many symptoms that i get , i think you can only try these things to see if they work for you. good luck .

    Hi \"Belly\"

thank you so much for your reply.

I have also been prescribed Spasmonal in addition to Mebeverine. The doctor said Spas. is for when I got pain attack and Meb. to take regularly like a kind of cure. I haven't started yet since I do not like taking medicines but I always take them with me since the pain surprises me any moment as you know.

I have also bought some probiotic and prebiotic called antiBloat since lately my belly is just so big, sometimes I feel so embaressed, especially when I have to go out and want to wear nice dress but also at work.

I called the helpline number I found on this website and the also suggested Bimuno probiotic&prebiotic, apparently is good to maintain the good bacteria and healthy gut and also to regulate diarrhoea or constipation.

I would suggest avoiding dairy products ( so they said at the helpline), salads, yeast, alchool, they said to cut in sugur and sweet no fizzy drinks either.I am coffee addicted and now that I am no having my coffee in the morning it's so hard!!

I asked if it was the case to do a food allergy test but they said it is not worth it and really expensive (around £200). Well let's try to avoid these kind of things you have also mentioned althought it's tuft!

Please keep me informed with your progress and visits.

    All the best!

I had Mebeverine for a few months, but it didn't seem to help - then I found out it is an anti-spasmodic, for the pain, which explains why it didn't work for me. It can also cause constipation. I (thankfully) don't have the pain very often (which is why the Mebeverine didn't do much for me) but when I do, I take high-strength painkillers and have a warm bath while I wait for them to take effect. The warm bath really helps. I'm not sure if it's the heat, or the angle I'm lying at in the bath that does it. I lie in the bath and breathe in and out slowly. Once I've been to the loo the pain usually goes away.

My usual type of attack (about once a week) is when my gut goes into overdrive, I need to visit the loo a few times in one day, and I get gassy (which makes me feel nauseous), have panicky feelings, and sometimes feel hot. The panicky feelings are the worst thing for me, and I find it difficult to settle to anything. Distracting myself helps a lot, whether it's working on the computer (mental distraction) or doing housework (if I'm feeling really restless). I lose my appetite but try and eat something, because not eating makes the nausea 10 times worse. Complan helps if I really can't eat, because it's putting something in my stomach. Peppermint tea helps too with the gas and nausea. You can get tablets from your doctor for nausea if its really bad.

I keep a diary of symptoms of what I ate, what I was doing before the attack (including a couple of days before), and what I think the suspected trigger was for the attack.

Looking back at the the diary has helped me to identify that my IBS is NOT linked to my menstrual cycle, and that it's not so much WHAT I eat that triggers an attack, as the fact that I ate SOMETHING, although when I'm stressed or in the throes of an attack some foods are definitely worse than others. I now know to rest after eating or exercise, as after both these events, within an hour I usually need to empty my bowels. If I don't rest, I will end up with constipation. (Fybogel helps with constipation.)

I know my IBS is linked to being in a long-term stressful situation (pressure of work). My weekly attacks are linked to something that started in autumn 2007, but they are now lessening in severity. I tried 2 sessions of hypnotherapy a couple of months ago, and I don't know if it has had anything to do with it, but the attacks have certainly been less severe since then.

A consultant told me that once your gut has 'got out of synch' with itself, it can take months to get it back into its proper rhythm again. I love my job and the people I work with and have no plans to leave, but know to look out for stressful situations and try and manage them better in the first place next time, before I get into months of being in the 'out of synch' situation again. Although it's not always obvious to me when I AM stressed, I've noticed my stomach 'knots up' and my breathing is more rapid and shallow. I'm trying to be more self-aware now.

I've suffered stomach problems for years also and have noticed I now suffer from anxiety attacks with this bloating problem. I look pregnant that's how much of bloating I have gotten ...it's depressing but I'm trying everything. They label it as IBS but all I have is BLOAT constantly no matter what diet or what I try

Hi,I am also new to this forum,I was diagnosed with ibs just over a year ago with going to the doctors every month with cramp like pains in my stomach(left and right sided)I don't suffer a lot with constipation or diarhea but certain things I eat really do start my stomach churning,in the past month my pain as moved over to the right side of my abdomen and around my side groin and back, sometimes i get a gassy like burning feeling to the right of my belly button too,i have been to the a@e about 5 times thinking there was something wrong with my appendix but after tests of my stomach they just tell me it's my ibs playing up again,I too get right sided shoulder pain which the doctor tells me is also a symptom of ibs ,I really believe as we age it's our body telling us what we can and cannot eat but I have yet to find anything that does not cause a flare up,I would just like to add I feel for everyone who as ibs and just wish there was a better medical understanding of it,thanks for listening ??

    Hi Belly,

how is it going? I still have my usual attack and just had a tablet of Spasmodol. Period is very closed and this makes my IBS even worst. I would say the worst time of the month.

Did you do to the spiritual lady?

I am doing acupuncture and I feel a bit better overall but can't say it improves the situation. It's good while you do it cause the also do a massage at the end of every session and this makes you feel really relaxed, although I am scheptical this is going to improve my guts situation.

I am also taking Aloa vera tablets every day and drinking chinese herbal tea that helps to regulate my bowels movement.

    Take care

I have just discovered bimuno powders after suffering from ibs for over 30 years. The are absolutely amazing, I haven't felt so well for years, no bloating, pain or tiredness. I usually take buscopan which are great too but I am convinced these little powders are the answer, they claim to work in 7 days but I felt the benefits in 3, I feel like shouting from the rooftops about them, my health is transformed

Try Total Candida Defence, working for me after one week! Also as an IBS sufferer I decided to cut out Gluten from my diet (negative for coeliac) . Bread for me seemed the worst culprit for the bloating. Been taking a Total Candida Defence for a week now and my bloating isn't half as bad as it was also gas/wind as calmed lots. I shall continue with the Gluten free products & Total Candida Defence. I bought these from Amazon a friend recommended them and lots of positive reviews which is why I gave them a try smile

Hi just want to say I feel your every word I have been suffering also. They claim it's IBS but I don't think so I have never had any pain the only thing that consumes my LIFE is bloat n I've tried everything I could think of or hear about. But I too am bloated to the point I look pregnant n I have always had a small frame so it shows quite well. I can never gain any weight because everything I eat bothers me. I've tried to use probiotics but it seems to bloat me more so I can never see the full extent of of if it helps cuz I don't like the bloat... I have yet to try the prebiotic. As of right now I'm on (amitriptyline) which treats many different conditions it boast my appetite but my bloat is still there. One thing I can tell u anytime ur PRIMARY doctor say ooh this n that won't work or NO NEED TO SEE A stomach specialist you need to WALK away from him n call your insurance n find a gastro doctor that your insurance covers. A primary care doctor can only treat u to a limit he DOES NOT specialize in gastrointestinal. But primary care doctors love to keep u coming back cuz ur insurance pays them so why would they send u somewhere else. Go see a specialist in that field. Specialist did test on me that I never even heard of just to rule everything out. I hope u get well as I wish this for me too. I'm alittle over 100 lbs I should be able to wear a shirt n size small but because of my belly bloat I can't.
