What kind of pain do you feel with your hiatus hernia

Hi there, I had a recent ogd which found gastritis oesophagitis and a small hiatus hernia. I've been on ppis for 10 weeks and have had a bruised feeling near my sternum ( just to the left) and also sometimes burning pain in my stomach after a hot drink. Does this sound famiar or could it be something else? Just trying to put my mind at rest. Got another ogd on Friday next but Im a bit scared.thanks in advance

I get severe burning pains near my incisional hernia but they tend to be random and have nothing to do with hot drinks.

Yes, this sounds familiar to me. As well as tenderness behind the breastbone, I, like so many others on this site have pain in left of chest which makes you feel it  is

a heart problem but I also had a strange pain as if it was in the flesh of my chest (worth looking at references on this site to the "vagus nerve"). Problems with hot drinks also seems to be a regular symptom though with me its not too bad. (I let tea etc cool down for a while before drinking.)

I found PPIs caused more symtoms than they cured. Pain in back radiating to shoulder blade, tender neck etc etc. Gaviscon helped me a bit.

    Best of luck.

Thanks for this. Has made me feel better, just to know I'm not alone. I have an inguinal hernia too which burns and feels bruised but wasn't sure if both types felt the same. Also good to know about the ppis, the pain started after I started them, funnily enough. Do you ever get a similar pain on the right? I do if I've lifted anything, now I'm wondering if it's my diaphragm?

Stella, I have HH but don't think it causes me too much problem. Specialist told me to take ppi's for six weeks to resolve inflammation in my osophagus. I had started eating little and often loose clothing round waist and using digestive enzymes with betaine HCL. I felt ok. So I stopped the enzymes and started 300mg Zantac daily. Within two weeks I was getting acid reflux and tummy started to feel strange and bruised. I also started excessive burping again, my original symptom. I stopped the Zantac and resumed taking the enzymes with almost immediate good results. I feel that my problem is low. Stomach acid and un digested food causes the bloating which can put pressure on the HH and force even small amounts of acid into the osophagus. Also put pressure on the vagas nerve which passes through the hiatus which can cause many symptoms

    Hi Stella

I have recently been diagnosed with a HH but am struggling to accept that the symptoms i have are really to do with a HH, I suffer extreme Chest pain on the left hand side, sometimes sharp and stabbing other times like a pressure as if something has got stuck. Really convinced its a heart problem but been back to the doctor numerous times, currently on esomeperazole but isn't helping ease the pain at the moment, This forum has been very useful for me to read people are in similar circumstances, hope it helps you too

Hi Stella, I've had a 3cm sliding hiatus hernia since last year and on a daily bascis I get chest pain, bloating, gas, burping, vile taste in mouth, neck and shoulder pain! and yes hot drinks cause me problems as well. ppis are uselesss and cause me more grief than there worth! there are many, many more symptoms with HH when it puts pressure on the vagus nerve...

    Take care, all the best.

Hi Eddie, just come off a forum for digestive enzymes. Body builders who process large amounts of food are saying that digestive enzymes are the most underrated supplement and can solve many health problems. I have excellent results taking digestive enzymes with betaine hcl. Doctors have only ever put me on acid suppressant drugs which always made things worse. The good thing is they work almost immediately you don't have to wait weeks for results. Also they stimulate your own bodies enzyme production. I usually take the for about 2to3 weeks and then I can go a few months before symptoms start to show again.

    Hi Stella

I have a 3 cm HH for the last 9 months. I am also on a 40 mg PPI (topzole). Somtimes i feel fine then other times like today feel no energy, pain at the sternum area, nausea. I also get burning pain in my stomach. Someone with gastritis said i should try drinking Aloe Vera Juice 20 ml morning and night it seems to have helped somewhat. Good luck the last 9 months for me has not been good for me.

Still have the pain, but now they're saying its costoschindritis. After a lot of messing around I am now on the waiting list for anti reflux surgery (LINX). Hopefully then I'll be able to throw the ppis in the bin 😊

    Hi Stella,

I just got an endoscopy two weeks ago and said I had a small hiatus hernia and my gut was inflamed, previous to this I was complaining about gut ache

and back ache just between my shoulder blades, burping more than usual. This was more noticable after my evening meal. Hope this is helpful, started taking vit B complex as I read this helps.

Stella, I was diagnose with acid reflux years ago and a hiatal hernia two years ago. I have all the normal symptoms, pain in the left breast, burping, pain in abdominal area, pain in upper shoulder too. If I wear tight clothes, it's worse. Also, my doctor told me to cut the caffeine, chocolate and spicy foods out of my diet completely. I was wondering if any other female wears underwire bras and seen to feel worse symptoms? I have these blood running cold feelings in the middle of my sternum. Scares the crap out of me sometimes.
