Any polycythemia Vera rub ra sufferers please note.

DO NOT ALLOW ANY DOCTOR TO PRESCRIBE IRON.

My local GP did this t me and I was taking for 8 weeks.

I was not feeling well during the time and suddenly realised that I shouldn't be taking something that makes too much red cells when I was already making too many myself.

I called my haematologist and he was very angry...now I am having 4 extra venesection so to try to minimise any damage.

I was on iron pills for years and when it was found that I had polycythemia Vera Ruba I wasn't told to stop them and when I questioned my doctor he said no need to! Plus I was also on a diuretic which again I was told to carry on taking. I stopped them both myself, good job as for some weird reason the haematologist so no further treatment required, so I still haven't had any venesection.

    Hello Scotslassie

I can relate to your situation exactly

I am  PVR also and was started off with 3/4 venesections every month until my levels came down to a reasonable level, this was organised by my Haemo specialist, then my local general ' specialist' ordered an Iron infusion. When I next saw my 'H' specialist he couldn't figure out why my levels had jumped to a new high level then he saw my notes and asked me why I had had this infusion! I said my Doc had told me too and he hit the roof . He said don't do it again and had to write to the doc and said leave treatment to those who knew what they were doing. My local then sent me a letter saying all my treatments were now in the hands of my 'H' specialist. And addmitted he was not in the know about PVR. Makes you wonder how safe some doctors are when they treat you for something they don't really understand. I find it's a case of 'Oh lets try this and see if it works' Well now I question everything if I don't find a good reason I don't follow until I do get a good reason. By the way now my levels have come down and I don't need to see the 'H' for three months. yippee. best wishes for a successful future.

      owHi,

      Thanks for the info.

I had my last for now venesection today and feel exhausted.

I see the haematologist tomorrow so hopefully he will be happy with my levels.

I agree, you should be able to trust that a doctor would read your files before blindly prescribing medicines that could potentially kill you.
