MindEd provides free mental health e-learning for anyone who works or volunteers with children, teenagers or young people. The MindEd programme includes free online CAMHS training, counselling courses and mental health resources for teachers and health professionals.
- Some children find it much harder than others to learn how to control themselves and can be described as inattentive, impulsive and overactive.
- All 'normal' children are active - it only becomes a problem when their level of activity creates difficulties for them or those around them, and they are described as a hyperactive child.
- These problems can lead to bad behaviour and aggression but frequently do not.
- These behaviours put some affected children at risk for underachievement at school and in adult life, and for some result in personality problems such as recklessness or an antisocial adjustment.
- There are also possible strengths that need to be recognised and brought out.
- Could the child be experiencing hyperkinetic disorder?
- Some of the later risks are brought about by adverse reactions from other people who do not understand the child's behaviour.
- It is easy for adults to be irritated by such behaviours displayed by children.
- The causes are in the child's genetic make-up and early environment.
- Recognition of the behaviours and understanding that they can be the result of a disability are important for the child's and family's understanding.
- Educational and clinical psychology can be helpful; medical help by paediatricians or child psychiatric teams can be obtained.
