Fitness benefits of playing tennis

Wimbledon was a blast. And while the country congratulates Murray, why not boost your weight loss and improve your health by playing along too.

Tennis is suitable for all ages and everyone can benefit; not just by improving your health, but by having fun too. So raise your racket, loft a ball and get into the swing of it.

Benefits of playing tennis

Cardiovascular exercise: A game of tennis burns calories, helps you tone up, and makes you feel great. One hour of singles can burn up to 550 calories while one hour of doubles can burn up to 400 calories.

Toning exercise: Tennis works nearly every muscle group but is particularly good for strengthening and toning your arms and legs.

Bone strength:Regular weight-bearing exercises, like tennis, can help fight osteoporosis by maintaining (and in some cases increasing) bone strength.

Flexibility:Tennis requires the body's full range of motion. Flexibility can increase with continuous stretching and manoeuvring.

Agility, co-ordination & balance:Tennis requires quick reaction time and radical shifts in direction, which improves your agility. Your hand-eye coordination can greatly improve through tennis, yet this skill is believed to develop through years of playing. Tennis also improves your balance as it requires you to hit the ball on the run and while stopping. You’ll have the balance of a ballerina in no time.

Social: Playing tennis is an opportunity to be sociable and meet new people. If you’d like to compete seriously, you can join a tennis league. Otherwise, there is plenty of time between sets for some fun.

All you need to get started

  • Tennis racket (if you’re a beginner there’s no need to buy an expensive racket)
  • Tennis shoes (when it comes to footwear, make sure to buy a suitable pair of tennis shoes to avoid injury)
  • Tennis balls (affordable and easily sourced via sports stores).
  • Water bottle (vital to stay hydrated)

The ball is in your court now. If you’re watching your weight, you don't have to miss out on the strawberries and cream at Wimbledon, as long as you get active on the court.

Game, set, match.
