Migraine is the name given to a particular type of headache that can affect anyone at any age. Its cause is unclear but is probably due to blood vessels in the head widening and narrowing which then affects surrounding nerves and so causes the pain.

The headache is typically a throbbing dull pain that affects one side of the head only. These may be more common in certain families and made worse or started by certain triggers such as foods (chocolate, cheese, wine), anxiety, periods and the pill.

Common symptoms include a headache lasting between four and 72 hours, and affecting one half of the head, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, with some sufferers needing to lie completely still in a dark room and flashing lights, blind spots or zigzag patterns in front of the eyes - about 15% of sufferers experience this. The headache is worse during movement and may be associated with tingling or numbness on one side of the body and it is often described as a 'throbbing' or 'pulsing' headache.
