1. Polymorphic light eruption (PMLE) is the name of a rash which occurs in reaction to sunlight on the skin.

2. PMLE is not infectious so you can't 'catch' it from someone.

3. PMLE has nothing to do with skin cancer.

4. Women get PMLE more often than men.

5. The appearance of PMLE rash varies from person to person but the most common type has large numbers of small red bumps.

6. It is not known why PMLE occurs but it is most likely to be related to an immune system reaction in the skin.

7. If you're a woman affected by PMLE, symptoms will tend to improve after the menopause (commonly around the age of 50).

8. Some people have a more severe form of PMLE which can occur even in winter.
