One of the best-known personality tests, the MBTI is often used in workplace assessments. Based on the theories of Carl Jung, the test is the work of Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. The two women spent 40 years researching and cataloguing differences in attitudes and behaviour until, in 1962, they produced a questionnaire that could identify people as one of 16 different personality types.
The 16 types are based on combinations of four pairs of basic temperaments. Generally, we show a stronger preference for one of the attitudes within each pair. Enthusiasts believe the MBTI can help us choose jobs or partners suited to our type. However, there is scepticism about the extent to which the MBTI is used in psychometric testing. Briggs and Myers had not made any formal study of psychology, and some claim their test lacks statistical validity.
