Take steps to improving your health during Get Walking Week


People in Great Britain are being encouraged to take steps to getting active and improving their health during the Ramblers biggest ever free short walks festival from 3-10 May.

Get Walking Week makes it easier for people to take their first steps into walking, helping to combat the current physical inactivity pandemic. During the week the Ramblers will be offering hundreds of free short walks.

A report produced by the Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support, Walking Works, highlights the life-threatening consequences of inactivity and concludes walking is the solution to physical inactivity.

Simon Barnett, director of walking development at the Ramblers, said: "Walking may be very straightforward, but if everyone in England did enough walking to meet recommended guidelines it could prevent 36,815 people dying prematurely, 294,730 cases of diabetes and 12,061 people going to hospital for emergency coronary heart disease treatment.

"The benefits are endless, yet despite the fact walking is so accessible and suitable for almost anyone, only 61% of adults in England are active enough.

"We know that some people need a helping hand to take their first steps into walking, which is why we run Get Walking Week. It's a great opportunity for everyone to come along, regardless of their current fitness levels, and take the first steps into a happier and healthier lifestyle."

Walking for Health, England's largest network of health walk schemes, will be inviting people across the country to walk with their local schemes during Get Walking Week, to help them get walking and keep walking.
