Button batteries and children - a deadly combination

In recent years, our tools, gadgets and toys have become increasingly small and compact. Consequently, they have increasingly been powered by small powerful button batteries rather than their rather more bulky equivalents.

Button batteries contain heavy metals such as zinc, mercury, nickel and lithium. They also contain very concentrated solutions of caustic chemicals such as potassium or sodium hydroxide. They are small and look harmless but they really are not.

You may have seen recent reports in the national news about dangers of batteries and children. This is because of a recent surge in cases of children who are presenting with related health problems, to hospitals across the country.

This is likely to be due to the increasing use of these small batteries in the home.
