Crazy food facts

Although food is an essential part of life, there is a fun and crazy side to it. After some interesting research and a week of sharing weird facts with anyone who would listen , I’ve put together some of my favourites. I was somewhat surprised to find out I had bomb making material and cyanide in my kitchen cupboards and that unless I become the worlds strongest person I will never be able to open a Macadamia nut.

When writing an article I should really research all aspects of it, but there are one or two of them I just wasn’t keen to try. The only thing I am willing to drop into a glass of good champagne is a strawberry and the only beetle I am prepared to eat is a chocolate one. But feel free to let me know if you try out any of these weird and wonderful particulars.

So impress your friends and family with a few “did you knows...” ,share some handy tips and hopefully raise a few eyebrows in the process.

Did you know…

  • Although white wine can be produced from both red and white grapes, red wine can only be made from red grapes.
  • If you plug your nose apples, potatoes, and onions all taste the same.
  • If you drop a raisin in a glass of real champagne it will bounce up and down in the glass.
  • Macadamia nuts are not sold in their shells because it takes 300 pounds per square inch of pressure to break the shell.
  • Supposedly, beetles tastes like apples.
  • Traditionally rice is thrown at a bride and groom as a symbol of fertility.
  • There is cyanide in apple pips, but don’t worry if you swallow a few it’s only found in very minuscule amounts.
  • Peanut oil can be processed to produce glycerol, which can be used to make nitroglycerin, one of the constituents of dynamite. However, there are other processes that can be used to make dynamite without using peanuts.
  • Lettuce is the only vegetable that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, or cooked.
  • Ice-pops were invented by 11 year old, Frank Epperson. Story has it that, he left his fizzy drink with a stirring stick outside overnight, and the rest is history.
  • Wrigley's gum was the first product to have a bar code on its packaging.
  • Mexican jumping beans jump because the larvae of a small moth that lives inside the shell spams when heated causing the bean to jump. It’s slightly stomach turning but true.
  • There are an endless amount of interesting nutrition and helpful facts out there and having to narrow it down to just 10 was no easy feat. But here are my Top 10

    Handy to know!

    1. Blueberries have more antioxidants than any other fruit or vegetables.
    2. Allegedly, Chewing gum while cutting onions can stop your eyes from watering.
    3. The heavier the lemon the juicier and tastier it is.
    4. You can tell if a boiled egg is fully cooked but spinning it on a flat surface. If the egg wobbles then it is still raw, and if it spins with ease it’s fully cooked.
    5. Honey is the only edible food that will never go bad. So when you are clearing out those kitchen cupboards there is no need to bin that honey jar even if it’s been there a while.
    6. Peanut butter is an effective way to to remove chewing gum from hair or clothes.
    7. Kiwis and broccoli are higher in vitamin C than oranges.
    8. Iceberg lettuce is the one most commonly eaten but it has the least nutritional qualities, others forms like Romaine are much higher in antioxidants.
    9. Bananas contain a natural chemical which can make a person happy. This same chemical is also found in a well known antidepressant.

    10. I just want to leave you with one really bizarre but true fact.
    11. During World War 2, in emergencies, coconut water was used as a substitute for blood plasma. Coconut water, not milk is sterile and has a perfect pH level.
