Q

Diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and oesophagitis - difficulties with swallowing

I have recently been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and oesophagitis. I’ve been prescribed 40 mg omeprazole daily, which I have been taking for nearly six weeks. I am still having difficulties with swallowing, food gets stuck and I end up vomiting. Any suggestions as I am fed up with not getting to eat a whole meal.

Q

I have COPD, diabetes and pernicious anaemia – will I always feel so tired?

I am female, 67 years old and I have COPD, diabetes and pernicious anaemia. I had my B12 jab last Friday but still feel very tired. I am having an hour’s sleep midday as I cannot last the day without that extra sleep. Will I always feel tired or is it a combination of illnesses? Thank you.

Q

ACE inhibitor cough

I went to my GPs surgery for headaches and was prescribed ramipril for hypertension. I have a history of asthma, albeit mild and intermittent, but the GP didn't look at my documents. I returned a week later with a cough and she prescribed another beta-blocker. Since then I have not stopped coughing. It keeps me up at night and stops me sleeping.

I have had a bronchoscopy which showed nothing specific but the hospital did tell me I did NOT have asthma. This was in April 2014. Since then I have had awful nights and in desperation visited a private doctor who informed me I DO have asthma and it was not being managed properly. I have used Ventolin® more frequently since.

It did improve quite a lot but I feel the "cough" coming back. My GPs are at a loss as to what this cough is. Can you help please?

Statin side effects

I am on 40 mg of atorvastatin and my joints are so sore. It used to be in my muscles for nine months but the last three months my knees and fingers have been really hurting. I am in my 60s and play tennis but that and the stairs are becoming a problem. I am also getting a lot of nausea. Can l reduce the amount of statins l take? I have hardening of the arteries and minor blockages

Q

Intolerant to Povidone

I think I’m intolerant to a substance in my prescription medication. What rights do I have? Through having to take a cocktail of drugs, during treatment for breast cancer and MRSA, I have become intolerant to a substance called povidone, which can be found in a lot of over-the-counter and prescription drugs. I believe the substance, which is man-made from the petrochemical industry, is used to make drugs cheap. The pharmacist has been very helpful, but the GPs are reluctant to specify makes of the drugs, which I have to take, that do not contain povidone. Do I have any rights in this regard? The last GP I saw, was most unsympathetic.

Q

Information on COPD

I would appreciate information re COPD. I have had lung damage from smoking and another severe lung condition. Currently I don't take medication and the condition is controlled by diet, by avoidance of mucus-forming drinks and food. What medication is available to treat COPD which is effective in controlling and /or alleviating the mucus deposit in the lungs?
