Contact the Elderly is a national charity, founded in 1965, which tackles acute loneliness amongst older people, aged 75 and above, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of elderly people in local communities throughout England, Scotland and Wales.
One Sunday a month, each older guest is collected from their own home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host's home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the charity's drivers and older guests remain the same. This ensures that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.
There is increasing evidence to show that loneliness and social exclusion are pivotal factors in physical and mental health. Regular social contact can help to alleviate depression and anxiety. The free, monthly tea parties allow elderly people to remain independent in their homes, whilst ensuring they re-connect with their local communities and can be discretely monitored for signs of anxiety and depression. A survey, carried out in 2011 among 1,000 older guests, shows the profound difference the tea parties make to the lives of older people, with 86% feeling less lonely as a result of the tea parties, 61% feeling more confident and 22% seeing their GPs less.
