The Institute of Alcohol Studies' (IAS) core aim is to serve the public interest on public policy issues linked to alcohol. They do this by advocating for the use of scientific evidence in policy-making to reduce alcohol-related harm.
They are lucky in being one of the few organisations that does not depend on the Government or the alcohol industry for funds - so that they can be an independent voice on alcohol policy. This means they can translate the scientific evidence honestly, whatever the implications for those who have to make the hard decisions in practice.
