Dementia: The scale of the problem

Protective lifestyle changes that may help reduce dementia risks

· Eating a healthy diet:

     - The Mediterranean Diet is thought to be beneficial for general health and brain function

     - Eating oily fish regularly as part of a balanced diet

· Brain training – keeping your brain active. This is thought to improve everyday functioning in the elderly, but whether it decreases the risk of dementia remains unproven

· Maintaining a good sleep routine

· Maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle:

     - Get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked with your doctor, and follow their guidance. Both, if too high, are risk factors for vascular dementia

· Taking regular exercise.
