Fireworks guide: how to stay safe this Bonfire Night

How to use fireworks safely at home

The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to go to a local organised event. However, if you decide to have fireworks at home, please be sure to do the following:

  • Only buy fireworks marked with the safety mark BS 7114
  • Don't drink alcohol if setting off fireworks
  • Store fireworks in a closed, metal box
  • Follow the instructions on each firework
  • Light at arm's length, using a taper
  • Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn't gone off, it could still explode
  • Never throw used fireworks in the bonfire
  • Always supervise children, set up a barrier at a safe distance and ensure everyone stands behind it.
