Guided imagery basics

This technique is most effective when you are both comfortable and relaxed so when using the method as a means of self-help, begin with the following:

Find a peaceful spot where you won't be disturbed.

Close your eyes and begin to focus on your breathing. Inhale and hold for a couple of seconds before exhaling slowly.

Try to focus your attention on any tension within your body.

Try to let any areas of tension go with each out-breath.

Tips for successful guided imagery

Throughout the session try and focus on more than just visualising. If you are picturing yourself walking along an icy forest path, what would the leaves feel like crunching under your feet? How would the crisp, winter air feel brushing against your cheeks? Try and immerse yourself fully in the experience.

As the session or script draws to a close, take a few moments to gradually bring yourself back to the present before opening your eyes.
