Let's talk about herpes: not forgetting shingles and cold sores!

Is there a cure for herpes?

The disease cannot be cured as it lies dormant and inaccessible in spinal nerves during non-active periods. It pops up in times of being run down; when the immune system is weak or battling another infection. This is the case for oral herpes (cold sores), the genital variety or on the body (shingles). Flare-ups are shortened and can be treated by antivirals if caught early, and painkillers ease discomfort. Most of us actually have some of form of the virus, often gained in young life from a kiss on the cheek from a relative. It is almost unavoidable and rarely dangerous.
