Report finds high thresholds to access children's mental health services

What need to be done?

Why is there such a problem in child and young people's mental health services?

Like many areas of the NHS, the biggest problem is funding. When costs are increased in one place, they need to be offset in others. The majority of trusts (83%) also reported they had difficulties in recruitment of staff as well leading to vacancies and a further depleted service.

What needs to be done?

The report suggests there needs to be reforms to research, early intervention and service access. They also suggest a national programme on mental health and wellbeing in schools, with better liaison between schools and the mental health services for children and young people to help with early intervention for those that need it. This really is vital.
