Tramadol painkiller "claiming more lives than any other drug" claims top pathologist

The painkiller tramadol, which is taken by thousands of people daily via prescription, is claiming more lives than any other drug, according to Northern Ireland's top pathologist.

Last year, 33 deaths in Northern Ireland were linked to this painkiller, although this medication does not cause harm if taken correctly. The potential dangers arise when it is taken mixed with other drugs or alcohol.

Professor Jack Crane said: "I don't think people realise how potentially risky Tramadol is. I think it's because it's a prescription drug - people assume it's safe."

The opiate-based drug is used to treat moderate or severe pain. There are many different forms, strengths and brands of tramadol. Some forms and brands of tramadol start working quickly to ease pain. Others release the tramadol they contain more slowly over several hours to provide a constant and more-even pain control.
