Bubble tea: key facts to know

Where does bubble tea come from?

Bubble tea originates from Taiwan where they are famed for their tea houses. The first step towards its creation was in the 1980s when a business started adding fruit flavours to their teas, to draw in more customers. In order to get the flavour evenly distributed within the drink they would shake the tea and fruit mix which created the bubbles which led to the name 'Bubble Tea'.

It wasn't until a couple of years later that the tapioca pearls were introduced by Liu Han-Chieh, after she combined her tea with her dessert which contained tapioca pearls. It was this curiosity that resulted in the bubble tea we know and love today.
