Why are girls becoming increasingly unhappy?
The experts believe a lot of it is about self-image and self-esteem. Girls are bombarded with images daily through the internet, social media and even occasionally those old-fashioned things called magazines. Images of perfect people (which are probably altered using photo editing tools) don't seem to compare in any way to their own developing bodies.
Friends finding a spare millimetre of skin on a bare midriff to pinch and saying: "I'm soooo fat…" Then they have spots to deal with, plus an awareness of sexuality, and a new teenage view of being "gender fluid".
My 13-year-old explained that one to me. It turns out you don't have to be male or female, straight or gay or even bisexual any more. Anything goes. How utterly confusing for them.
