Giving up Chocolate? The facts!

Kellie Collins

With so much choice these days, those of us ladies who have the odd chocolate bar want to savour every Delight-ful moment, especially that creamy melt-in-your-mouth feeling that makes us feel so good for even just a few minutes. The gentlemen among us may not be able to identify with this feeling, because according to research by Mars, men eat chocolate simply because they are hungry but for women it’s much more than that.

Women see chocolate as an indulgence so it is perceived to be more appealing to females. The most Delight-ful thing about Mars Delight is that it comes in two pieces, so all you virtuous ladies with willpower will be able to save some for later.

What those chocolate boffins at Mars definitely won’t be telling you is that this delightful treat is their most fattening bar ever, and indeed, it’s one of the highest-fat chocolate bars on the market!

It would be easy to think from the name that this is a lighter version of the good old Mars bar, therefore making us calorie-counters want to rush out and try it in an attempt to answer all our chocolate dilemmas.

Sure enough the Mars Delight is less filling than a heavy Mars bar, mainly due to it’s crispy wafer centre – just perfect for balmy summer days. But don’t forget about the milk chocolate covering, caramel cream and chocolate flavour cream, which believe me, are far from “light”!

Imagine if the label said “creamy saturated fat and smooth sugar filling” – would you be so keen then? No, I didn’t think so. But when it comes down to the ingredients, Mars Delight is basically a heady concoction of fat and sugar, all blended into a highly calorific and fat-filled bar!

Let’s have a look at the facts: one whole 40 gram bar of Mars Delight has 220 calories and 14 grams of fat – that’s about 20% of the total recommended daily fat intake for women.

Considering it’s smaller and less filling than your average chocolate bar, this isn’t good news as it is unlikely that the 40 grams is going to satisfy any chocolate cravings or hunger pangs. And you can forget about being virtuous and saving half for later – the first half will be gone in one bite before you’ve even realised!

A Twix weighs 58 grams and has nearly the same amount of fat but it would be much easier to save half a Twix for later. Even a traditional Mars bar would be better at 224 calories and 8 grams of fat per 50 gram bar– and you can be sure that it will fill you up for longer!

Looking at it in bigger terms, 100 grams of Mars Delight will give you 551 calories and 35 grams of fat. Compare this with a Big Mac which has 493 calories and 23 grams of fat, and you will get the picture that this indulgent chocolate treat is in a league of it’s own.

So you’ve been warned! Be prepared for the advertising campaign and resist! You DON’T need this bar and it WON’T enhance your life – all it’s gonna do is enhance your hips! Not so Delight-ful after all!
